Job Description

The Blackwood Department of Real Estate, Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, is seeking a self-starting, resourceful, and motivated marketing and communications professional to support the Blackwood's academic programs, faculty, students, and Industry Advisory Board. In addition to promoting the Blackwood through a coordinated strategy that integrates social and traditional media -- including media relations -- this talented individual will also be responsible for marketing the Department's academic programs to prospective students, promoting students and graduates to potential employers, and promoting faculty research to a broad audience.

Reporting to the department head, and coordinating with Pamplin's director of marketing and communications, the successful candidate will be a gifted storyteller who disseminates engaging content across multiple platforms and channels that highlight Blackwood's teaching, research, industry connections, students, and alumni to diverse stakeholders including potential students and their parents, employers of graduates, and peer academic units. In addition to external communications, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading the creation and execution of internal communications.

This position requires excellent writing skills and creation of engaging visual material along with experience developing such content for web pages, blog posts, social media posts, contributed articles, PR messaging, and more. Knowledge in AP style and an understanding of the relevant news and social media trends is essential for this position.

The position will also support departmental efforts in student recruitment, student career opportunities, and manage Blackwood's Industry Advisory Board. The successful candidate will be a willing team member who helps others in the execution of Blackwood activities as needed.

This position requires candidates with persuasive communication and people skills who can contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts of Blackwood, Pamplin and Virginia Tech. A deep commitment to diversity is fundamental to the appointment. A willingness to work collegially and collaboratively with faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds is necessary. Communications will capture and convey the real estate experience, culture, and department initiatives. The position is based in Blacksburg, VA. While the position is hybrid, the majority of the work will be in person, in the offices of the Blackwood Department of Real Estate, and hybrid scheduling will be at the discretion and approval of the department head.

Responsibilities

  • Develop short- and long-term strategies and tactics to promote the Blackwood Department of Real Estate.

  • Develop print and digital materials and promotional content to increase awareness of the department, including compelling blog posts, social media posts, contributed articles, and other materials.

  • Manage and update website content and social media platforms with fundamental and timely content.

  • Assist with day-to-day management and execution of content marketing strategies to support student recruitment.

  • Manage the Blackwood Industry Advisory Board and its biannual Industry Advisory Board meetings.

  • Lead the organization and management of biannual career fairs and other interactions with industry to provide internships and jobs for students.

  • Work collaboratively with the Pamplin's marketing team and across Virginia Tech communications departments to develop and ensure activities align with college and VT strategic initiatives.

  • Supervise a part-time person who posts to the department's social media platforms.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism, or a related field.

  • Experience leading marketing and communication efforts.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including expert knowledge of AP style.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and ability to learn design software and office applications such as: Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat), Ensemble, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated experience with writing, creating digital artwork and using photography and video to develop innovative promotional content.

  • Strong abilities and expertise in developing, executing, and leading communications and marketing strategies and tactics.

  • Familiarity with digital content strategy and management, including content management systems and other web platforms as well as professional/organizational social media management.

  • Experience working with multiple communication platforms in a professional setting.

  • Experience meeting deadlines and navigating multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Strong organizational and people skills and the ability to thrive in a highly dynamic, team-based environment.

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends to attend student, industry, and other department-sponsored events on-campus and at off-campus locations.

  • Experience within a brand and developing a unit's brand and promotion of the brand.

  • Creative and entrepreneurial individual that proposes initiatives to enhance department and team success.

  • Demonstrated experience in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or relevant field.

  • Professional experience within an institution of higher education.

  • Experience representing an academic program to students, parents, or industry leaders.

  • Experience highlighting and developing content for diverse groups in a manner that is appropriate, sensitive, and ethical.

  • Experience with photography and shooting and editing video.

  • Willingness to learn software used by Virginia Tech such as Banner, Hokie SPA, and Canvas.

  • Familiarity with commercial or residential real estate.
