ABOUT THE JOB

The Mayor's Office of Communications is seeking an unpaid, part-time, in-person intern. The intern will experience a fast-paced, dynamic, and professional environment of communications, public and media relations, digital content creation and management. The intern will learn about Mayor Johnston and his initiatives, Denver municipal government and public service. This opportunity is available from September-December 2024 for 15 weeks. This is a part-time internship requiring 16-20 hours per week during normal business hours which are 8:00am - 5:00pm. Hours/schedule are flexible but this position is IN-PERSON.

This internship is a tremendous opportunity for a communications-minded individual to have meaningful involvement within a working communications office for an elected official. The intern will report to the Communications Specialist and Communications Director and will receive real-time feedback on performance as well as a review at the end of the internship.

The intern will be involved with variety of tasks, including media tracking, drafting media advisories and press releases, creating digital content, editing digital and written content, and pitching to news organizations. The intern will have the opportunity to own and lead on certain processes and will be involved in regular team meetings with senior leadership. The intern will be able to participate in the planning and deployment of communications efforts and strategies and will have ample opportunity to partner and collaborate on processes, procedures, and idea generation.

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to experience some or all of the following:

  • Creating written and digital communications content

  • Productive working relationships with city departments and agencies

  • Partnering and collaboration on the creation and deployment of communications strategies

  • Media relations and attending press conferences.

  • Digital content production

  • Special projects and other related duties and/or responsibilities as assigned or requested.

DAILY DUTIES INCLUDE

  • Researching, compiling, and distributing media clips

  • Drafting written content; including but not limited to press releases, media advisories, statements, and web content.

  • Creating and producing digital content; including but not limited to videos, photos, web, and social media content.

  • Pitching stories and ideas to news organizations and media desks

  • Assist in the setup and production of press conferences.

  • Supporting the Communications Team on projects as needed

About You

Our ideal candidate has some or all of the following experience, skill, and characteristics:

  • A current student (or recent graduate) seeking a degree in Communication, Journalism, Marketing or Political Science

  • Microsoft Office Suite proficiency

  • Independent worker, self-starter, takes initiative, can effectively prioritize and multi-task.

  • Excellent communication skills, having the ability to receive and communicate information clearly and concisely; both verbally and written.

  • Attention to detail, organizational skills, and a commitment to excellence.

  • Possess a positive attitude and strong desire to serve the citizens of the City and County of Denver

  • Bilingual preferred: Spanish or Vietnamese

  • Ability to commit to a minimum of 16 hours per week.

  • Education: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor's or higher degree, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion)

Location Flexibility

The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

In lieu of pay, the intern is compensated through invaluable work experience and the chance to learn firsthand the innerworkings of one of the highest public offices in the state. Interns could observe aspects related to public policy processes and will be exposed to a wide range of governmental needs that it takes to change administration, innovative processes, and workplace ethics.
