The Maine Department of Marine Resources is seeking to fill three limited period Marine Resources Specialist Il positions in the Bureau of Marine Science, Division of Marine Mammal Research.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: There are three Marine Resource Specialist II positions available, all of which are part of the Gear Team based out of DMR's Boothbay Harbor laboratory.

As largely field-based technical positions, the successful candidates will be responsible for conducting trainings and collaborative research on alternative and on-demand fishing gears coast-wide with lobster and gillnet fishermen, gear manufacturers, relevant stakeholders, and other partners. Data collected with the program will be used to identify successes and challenges with alternative gear technologies in Maine's fixed gear fisheries, as well as provide options to reduce potential risk to protected species, including the North Atlantic right whale.

Specific duties include working on commercial fishing vessels to both collect data and train participating fishermen on proper use of on-demand and experimental fishing technologies as part of the Maine Innovative Gear Library or other relevant research projects. These positions will also train participants in data collection and will complete associated data entry, compiling and QA/QC from data both collected by the gear team and submitted by fishermen.

Gear setup, maintenance, inventory, and troubleshooting will be required. Data analysis will be done as needed and under the direction of the project supervisor. This position requires interacting with commercial fishermen, the public and partnering organizations.

Work is performed under general supervision. The position will assist other programs within the Bureau of Marine Science when available and as needed. Travel in-state is expected and costs including time, per-diem and lodging will be covered directly or reimbursed.

While not conducting fieldwork, the employee is expected to work in the Boothbay office, with the option for remote work three days a week. Field work may require working on weekends.

For questions specific to the position, please contact Erin Summers at Erin.L.Summers@maine.gov

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Five (5) years experience and/or education in the compilation and summarization of scientific field and laboratory data to include a minimum of one year of experience in natural resource science, management, technology, laboratory, or field work.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in at-sea work and the ability to work independently under physically challenging conditions; knowledge of Maine fisheries and coastal communities; prior experience or ability to develop relationships with fishing industry members; familiarity with MS Access, ArcGIS and R or other statistical programs; comfort with computer hardware and relational databases are desirable. Additional qualities must include strong interpersonal, communication, and computer skills; a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at the same time with high attention to detail; the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision; and willingness to travel.
