The Department of Marine Resources, Division of Marine Mammal Research, is seeking a candidate to fill the vacant, limited period, Marine Resource Scientist II position out of West Boothbay Harbor.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is hiring a Marine Resource Scientist II to lead the Habitat Sampling Program within the Division of Marine Mammal Research.

The position will be responsible for designing, planning, coordinating, and implementing habitat and prey related research designed to inform the conservation and management of the endangered North Atlantic right whale. Work will include conducting research on oceanographic variables, plankton, and habitat characterization and modeling for right whales and other marine mammals in the Gulf of Maine. This position will lead field data collection through a variety of survey and monitoring techniques.

This includes the design of project goals, timelines, and staffing, creation of protocols, implementation of field work, oversight of data collection and entry, statistical data analysis, reporting, and functional supervision of other staff and contractors working on the project. Decisions related to the implementation of a primary research project will be done with limited supervision. This position will also propose, develop, and implement areas of additional research and analysis to meet departmental program goals.

Additionally, this position will have a primary role in writing grants, disseminating results, writing reports, and publishing their work. Finally, the positions will work across programmatic lines within the Division of Marine Resources to foster collaboration and maximize DMR's strengths.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED: Knowledge of sampling techniques and project design related to oceanographic and plankton research is highly preferred.

The ability to identify zooplankton to species level is preferred but not required.

The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to manage a research program independently and publish their results. Knowledge of right whale biology, distribution, and habitat preference, and the coast of Maine and its relevant fisheries are all preferred but not required.

There is a preference for a candidate with experience in spatial and statistical analyses, modeling techniques, relational databases, as well as the knowledge and ability to apply for competitive grant opportunities. Knowledge of MS Office products, R, SQL, and GIS (R & ArcGIS Pro). This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

This position will have the potential for hybrid remote work capabilities with prior authorization from the managing authority.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering field or equivalent in directly related work experience and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and/or management or related field.

Preference will be given to previous experience in a supervisory capacity. Equivalent experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
