FEMALE/MINORITIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY Immediate need to fill fulltime Marine Police Officer positions. Serves as uniformed officer with responsibilities for consistent and effective enforcement of the laws and regulations on marine life conservation, exercises authority in boarding vessels for inspecting harvesting and transporting; licensing, polluted area sanitation; boating safety and navigation; performing search, rescue, recovery, and assistance on the waterways.

May issue summonses and make appearances in court. Serves on a major vessel or operates a radio-equipped patrol car with trailable boat. Makes dockside inspections, boards commercial and recreational boats, and may sell commercial seafood licenses.

May be called upon for special assignments involving homeland security or undercover observation. Positions will be in Gloucester County. NOTE: New Salaries eff. 1/10/19 ?? uncertified $41,814 after 12 months will increase to $43,905. Certified salary is dependent on qualification.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and understanding of the seafood industry; the laws and regulations relating to commercial and recreational fishing, licensing, and enforcement. Must have proven ability to deal effectively with the general public; have knowledge a ability to pilot and navigate watercraft in the coastal waters of VA.

Must be free from commercial fishing interests and live within 30 minutes travel of the duty station, and be eligible for a valid VA drivers license. Position has a variable work schedule, 7 days a week with rotating shifts. Assignments and work schedules vary according to fluctuation in harvesting, weather, seasons, and markets.

Newly hired officers have a 12-month probationary period and non-certified Law Enforcement hires will be required to attend the Law Enforcement Academy and continued employment is dependent on successful completion and certification. Visible tattoos and body jewelry are prohibited and an annual conflict of interest disclosure is required. This position requires passing of a physical agility and swim test, a criminal background investigation, credit check, physical exam and drug testing. Federal law prohibits a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from carrying a firearm.

The positions are anticipated to begin in the fall of 2019. The School of Marine Science at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for William & Mary. Chartered in 1940, VIMS is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. VIMS employs 52 full-time faculty members, 256 staff, and has 80 graduate students in master's and doctoral programs. There are four academic departments at VIMS: Biological Sciences, Environmental and Aquatic Health Sciences, Fisheries Science, and Physical Sciences. Further information on the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the School of Marine Science may be accessed through the web at: The successful candidate will develop and maintain an active research program that is externally well-funded, teach core and advanced courses, advise students (primarily at the graduate level), participate in university and VIMS/SMS governance, and provide advisory service on related resource management issues to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Candidates who are prepared to engage in cross-disciplinary research consistent with the VIMS mission will be especially welcome. We anticipate hires in both organic and inorganic chemistry. Departmental affiliation will be determined based on the interests and expertise of the successful applicants. Potential areas of interest include: inorganic and organic geochemistry, biochemistry, molecular and physical exchange processes, and effects of climate change and human activities in coastal and estuarine waters.
