OVERVIEW: A Marine Painter is responsible for paint repairs and complete paint jobs on any vessel from the waterline up. The main substrate surfaces to be prepared and painted include: fiberglass, aluminum, wood, steel, & plastics. The starting procedures of finishing these materials may vary from bare substrates to previously primed and painted surfaces. The Painter will need to be familiar with the protection of the vessels, preparation of the substrates, as well as the application of epoxy primers, epoxy faring compounds, linear polyurethane gloss topcoats, acrylic urethane topcoats, & single stage polyurethane enamels. The Painter will need to be able to blend and buff repairs to a finish quality topcoat surface. Not required are color-matching skills but this talent is a plus. The Painter will need to be able to work with a team for big projects and as an individual on small repair projects.

KEY TASKS:

  • Maintain a good work ethic and attitude.

  • Maintain quality of all work completed.

  • Complete repair work in a timely manner.

  • Must have sound knowledge or preparation and application of yacht finishes (i.e., epoxy primers and epoxy fairing compounds).

  • Must understand proper procedures for preparation, and detailing necessary prior to the application of finish coatings.

  • Must be able to assemble scaffolds and work safely on them, often from significant heights. Must understand OSHA requirements for establishing safe scaffold conditions.

  • Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces such as engine rooms, bilge areas, tanks etc.

  • Must understand the proper and necessary use of protective materials.

  • Must understand and be skilled in the removal and reinstallation of hardware including proper insulation and bedding techniques.

  • Must have the ability to wear and use a respirator, and other personal protective equipment where necessary.

  • Maintain and use necessary hand tools as outlined on tool list.

  • Must understand basic requirements for proper disposal of hazardous materials (i.e. solvents, paint-related waste)

  • Must understand how to properly store materials, contain particulate matter and have a solid understanding for environmental regulations and a respect for it.

  • Must be available to work irregular and overtime hours as required to accomplish production schedule.

  • Other duties as directed.

Summary: The Painter is responsible for mixing, matching, and applying paint to various surfaces, completing touchups, and coordinating large painting projects. Essential Job Functions: * Applies paint to surfaces including canvas, walls, floors, doors, and cabinets. * Mixes, matches, and applies paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, and other finishes. * Cleans walls to ensure proper adherence and scrapes, sandpapers, primes, or seals surfaces prior to painting. * Fills cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives. * Erects scaffolding, movable and immovable staging and various rigging to gain access to difficult areas; moves furniture and equipment as necessary. * Removes fixtures such as pictures, doorknobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting. * Calculates amounts of required materials and estimates costs and selects and buys paint from vendors. * Cleans up all equipment, including brushes and spray guns. * Utilizes spray guns for large jobs. * Works on ladders to reach high ceilings or walls. * Performs additional duties as assigned. Education & Experience: * Must have a High School Diploma with five (5) years' experience in commercial building painting.
