This Marine Fisheries Technician will be the lead technician for sidescan and multibeam bathymetry data collection for the Artificial Reef, Oyster Sanctuary, and Oyster Cultch Planting Programs. This position is also the lead for maintaining the Private Aids to Navigation buoys stationed on inshore artificial reefs as required by the USCG and USACE. This position is responsible for planning and carrying out field work; safely navigating boats through coastal waters; maintaining sampling gear, boats, trailers, and trucks; coding and analyzing data; producing map products from sidescan imagery; and ordering supplies and equipment. This position will also take part in other Habitat and Enhancement operations, which includes stockpiling reef material using heavy equipment, monitoring reef deployments, and assisting in biological sampling programs. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect and process sidescan and multibeam data for use in public-facing map products

  • Act as lead technician for estuarine reef buoy service

  • Assist with Habitat and Enhancement operations including material stockpiling, material deployment, and biological sampling programs

  • Perform maintenance on trucks, boats, trailers, and outboard engines

  • Safely operate trucks, boats, trailers, and heavy equipment

The Division of Marine Fisheries

The DMF's jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. Recruitment Range:  $38,000 - $46,800

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL the following:

  • Experience operating and trailering boats.

  • Experience with marine electronics.

  • Experience with general maintenance for vehicles, boats, outboard engines, or boat trailers.

  • Experience in database management and/or analysis of data sets.

  • Experience with mapping or survey software (e.g., ArcGIS, SonarWiz, or Hypack).
