TITLE: IPS Combined Marching Band Color Guard Instructor (Summer

  • Fall)

SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY:

The Color Guard instructor coordinates the preparations, exercises, and activities of the IPS Combined Marching Band's Color Guard program. The instructor prepares and directs the unit for performance and competition integrated within the IPS Combined Marching Band. Pay is $4500 for entire season running July - early November.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design Color Guard choreography/work that effectively complements and enhances the visual and musical program of the marching band

  • Evaluate members' abilities and design equipment carriage accordingly.

  • Work closely with the Band Directors and the other marching band staff members to develop the visual program, including flag, uniform, and prop design.

  • Attend all rehearsals and performances

● Most rehearsals are normally Tuesdays/Thursday from 2:30-6:00 PM

● Competitions/Performances on some Friday nights and Saturdays throughout Aug

  • November

● Weekday performance at BOA Grand Nationals in early November

● Calendar is subject to change but advanced notice will be given if possible

  • Instruct members in fundamental and advanced dance, flag, and weapon technique and teach members show material

  • Choreograph, arrange, and implement color guard routine(s).

  • Coordinate the color guard rehearsal schedule with the Band Directors.

  • Create rehearsal plans in cooperation with the Band Directors.

  • Ensure the highest possible level of performance from color guard members through proper warm-up processes, effective preparation, and attention to individual members.

  • Recruit potential color guard members while retaining current members.

  • Ensure that all guard members are properly equipped for rehearsals and performances.

  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the Athletic Director, Band Directors, Percussion Director, Band Staff, Band Members, School Administration, Booster Organization, and Custodial Staff.

  • Manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances including maintenance, repair, and acquisition.

  • Participate in summer marching program planning as needed.

  • Recommend new equipment purchases within the budget allocations.

  • Establish communication with parents of color guard students and organize their efforts in support of the unit.

  • Other related duties as assigned to assist the Band Director in preparing students for competitions and public appearances.

"Day In the Life" Overview

On a regular day, as the Color Guard Instructor, you might:

● Take students through daily warm-up exercises as well as movement and body warm-ups

● Choreograph then teach students a movement/routine/warmup exercise.

● Teach and develop show choreography.

● Develop movement or body work for the visual program.

● Inventory flags and equipment and uniforms, and prepare equipment orders as needed with band director approval

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

● Previous Marching Band Color Guard/Winter Guard experience.

● Previous experience with developing and teaching dance and choreography.

● DCI or Independent Guard experience preferred, but not required.

● Must attend all scheduled rehearsals.

● Must pass district background check.
