Manufacturing Engineering Intern

At CONMED, our Manufacturing Engineering team comprises subject matter experts who strive to continuously improve the efficiency of our production lines -- ultimately ensuring our products are accessible to our health care customers around the world. We are seeking a driven and mechanically inclined engineering student to join the team for an internship during Summer 2019.

As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern, you will learn alongside seasoned professionals through hands on application of engineering, project management and LEAN principles and methodologies. You will work with advanced manufacturing technologies, such as automation and robotics, and will develop operations business acumen through conducting analyses such as cost savings and return on investment calculations. Your efforts in problem solving, innovation and cross-functional collaboration will directly contribute to taking the site's safety, quality, delivery and cost metrics to the next level.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineering student seeking a robust internship within a growing international medical device company with multiple manufacturing and design sites across the US.

Intern Responsibilities Include:

This internship will focus on providing support for projects and to support the process owners in addressing scrap and rework opportunities in production cells. Areas of focus will be pertaining to the following areas:

  • Floor support -- Rolling through-put yield monitoring, process monitoring to develop understanding for processing opportunities impacting yield. Root cause investigation to identify failure modes, resolution, and correction, along with documentation to support change

  • Project support -- Process development to support new product development and launches, cost reduction, productivity improvement, remediation activity and compliance and the generation of supporting documentation for the development and implantation of new and or revised process

  • Develop process monitoring: Establishing action and alert limits for critical processes

  • Provide support in processing ECO and validations to document changes in the process

  • Identify potential scrap reduction opportunities for Cast Stator, Helix, MicroFree and other products

Position Requirements:

  • Pursing completion of a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, with a focus on mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering preferred

  • Must be available to work onsite out of the Largo, FL facility, 1st shift, Monday -- Friday throughout the summer internship program (mid May -- late August 2019)

They will take on full leadership and management accountability for the safety, quality, schedule, and cost performance of a multi-cell/multi-shift operation. It is imperative the VSL have a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the production organization concerned with the assembly and processing operations including a thorough understanding of manufacturing related policies and procedures, and quality and customer requirements. This key role requires daily interaction with other functions to maintain and meet organizational goals and objectives. These groups include: technical support, manufacturing/test/design engineering, facilities, production control, finance and multiple internal customers. Achieving/exceeding safety, quality, delivery, cost goals and identifying and implementing continuous improvement opportunities using six sigma and lean methodologies are critical performance criteria for this position. The VSL will be responsible for all aspects of the value stream being led. This includes but is not limited to the following responsibilities: * Must use metrics to manage execution of the MRP plan while achieving cost and quality requirements * Working with other manufacturing facilities and industry to benchmark manufacturing best practices and implement them in the value stream * Implement Raytheon Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing * Must be able to perform strategic planning, develop relationships and achieve buy-in from all relevant parties for the strategy and vision for the value stream * Leader in the creation of the current and future state value stream maps and the implementation plan for getting from present to future * Will control cost through effective utilization of labor, proper maintenance of equipment, enforcement of safety rules, good housekeeping and reduction of scrap, waste and spoilage * Must be able to create and maintain working relationships with the functional leaders supplying the employees for the value stream * Responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with other departments. Will recommend changes in product design, tooling and manufacturing methods to improve production * Provide key input for performance development and salary planning. This includes the functional employees assigned to the value stream * Must insure all employees are treated fairly and consistently.
