Machinist/CNC Programmer

Position Summary:

This position functions as a machinist as well as a CNC Programmer

The Machinist sets up, operates and adjusts various types of conventional or automatic machines including CNC machines, lathes, drill presses, grinders and other precision equipment and may assist Manufacturing Team Members in the set-up of machines. This position reports to the Manufacturing Supervisor.

As a programmer, this position will perform a variety of duties to program CNC mills and lathes to perform diversified and complex machining operations involving close tolerances, including designing and programming jigs and fixtures.

Essential Job Functions:

Machinist

  • Works from drawings and written instructions to create parts.

  • Performs a wide variety of duties to set up and operate CNC machines. Performs diversified and complex operations on one or more machines simultaneously as required.

  • Writes and edits programs as needed to meet overall part tolerance requirements.

  • Requires basic knowledge of various metal and of measurements used in machining processes in order to provide technical leadership and assist in training less experienced machinist.

  • Understands all aspects of operating machines (every switch/button) and can proficiently run multiple machines simultaneously in the department.

  • Handles change overs without assistance, has the ability/understanding of CNC machine logic, able to write basic programs, post-edit CNC programs to fine-tune processes for optimal performance and is able to read, find errors and troubleshoot programs.

  • Capable of setting up jobs, running jobs and inspecting parts.

  • Capable of performing all "external" setup tasks for the next job, while the machine is running.

  • Possesses basic math and problem solving abilities.

  • Reads prints to recognize specifications for various surfaces being machined.

  • Works from prints and determine operational sequences; select tools, spindle speeds, tool feed rates and chucking/holding requirements in accordance with materials.

  • Inspects work pieces at beginning of and throughout production run to insure part meets tolerance requirements.

  • Inspects and understands when to replace cutting tools.

  • Demonstrates ability to effectively use all necessary measuring tools in order to assure conformance to print.

  • Understands and verifies tolerances for machined surfaces.

  • Detects worn tools and replaces tooling as appropriate.

  • Establish proper tool offsets and make necessary adjustments.

  • Performs preventative maintenance as needed on assigned equipment.

  • Advises supervisor of conduct that may violate rules, policies, and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned.

CNC Programmer

  • Interpret drawings and write programs for CNC machines that include proper methodology, tooling, cutting speeds and feeds in order to generate quality parts in accordance with production standards.

  • Create & revise set-up sheets based on tooling selection criteria and order tooling. Estimate set-up and run times.

  • Monitor to verify the accuracy of each job's initial set-up and final outcome. Revise programs and documentation based on engineering changes.

  • Evaluate existing programs for efficiency improvements.

  • Design and program machines to manufacture fixtures.

  • Maintain & update various computer databases related to programming.

  • Study and interpret drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and set-up requirements to maximize efficiencies.

  • Consult with managerial, engineering and technical personnel to clarify new program intent, identify problems and suggest changes. Consult with and assist machine operators to define and resolve problems in running CNC machine programs. Provide technical support to machine operators.

Experience:

  • Minimum 4 years' experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Knowledge of CNC machining and programming operations as generally acquired in one to three years of trades training or vocational schooling

  • 3-5 years of experience in setting up, operating and programming CNC machine.

  • 2-4 years experience in CNC Programming.

  • Advanced knowledge and use of precision measuring equipment. Advanced knowledge of reading drawings and specs with an understanding of geometric tolerancing and dimensions.

  • Advanced knowledge of programming segments and corresponding operations.

  • Proficient skills in Microsoft, Excel, Word, Auto-CAD and other computer programs.

  • Ability to adjust to competing demands and frequent changes.

  • Must possess math skills in geometry. Experience in Solidworks Viewer, Gibbs CAM, Expert DNC Programming desirable. Must be able to read and understand CNC & NCF programming language

Education and Certification

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent education or experience.

  • Associates degree preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Stand 10 hours a day.

  • Good manual dexterity.

  • Eye hand coordination and attention to detail.

  • Ability to bend, twist and turn.

This is a seasonal position, ending on or about December 31st, with a workweek expectation of a varied number of hours throughout the entire season, including daytime and some evenings and every Saturday, and this position is without benefits. The hours will be determined at the time of hire. Responsibilities * Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients and visitors; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors and subordinates. Support the Mission of The Salvation Army by treating every donor, contact and colleague with respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.• Respond to all inquiries concerning bell ringing, answering questions and encouraging and assisting potential bellringers.• Recruit bellringers (volunteer and paid if needed).• Download the bellringer forms from the Lotus Notes Northern Division Forms Database.• Obtain a list of payroll employee file numbers to be used for the paid bellringers.• Establish and maintain the kettle site work schedules. • Resolve scheduling conflicts and arrange for back ups.• Print kettle schedules for current day for kettle drivers.• Drive Kettle Routes to deliver/pick up kettles.• Ensure all kettles have a bank deposit slip with location written on it prior to setting the kettle at the location.• Pick up kettles and make daily bank deposits at designated bank.• Schedule volunteers to help organize deposits by straightening and sorting bills.• Conduct bellringer orientation training. • Inform potential paid bellringers, that by completing the new hire paperwork, they are making a good faith commitment to work as needed. Also advise them that if they are currently receiving any kind of government agency assistance, that assistance may be delayed or stopped once their paperwork has been processed. Ensure all bellringers new hire paperwork is completed before they are allowed to work. Special note: No IDs - no work. No completed paperwork - no work. • Conduct bell ringer orientations and assist bell ringers in completing all of the required paperwork.• Ensure all the employee new hire paperwork is either delivered, faxed, emailed scan or mailed to DHQ/HR no later than the first day they begin working to ensure we have sufficient time to process them for payroll. If you fax or scan your documents, please ensure that all originals are either mailed or delivered to DHQ/HR as soon as possible following the hire.• Ensure a detailed time card is completed for all paid bellringers and the times recorded are accurate.• Ensure the time cards are kept secured and safe from tampering.• Ensure the time cards are turned in for each payroll on time or as directed.• Notify DHQ/HR if a bellringer is released and will no longer be working as soon as possible, so they can be terminated in the payroll system.• If a bellringer is released for cause – please ensure the Service Extension Field Representative is notified immediately.• Assist in the printing/preparing of bell ringing reports as needed.• Assist in reporting the bell ringing statistics as needed.• And all other duties as assigned Qualifications High School diploma or GED, with a minimum of three years' experience working with volunteers, recruiting and/or project management or other relevant type experience.
