Job Description Summary

This position is a joint position supporting both the Penn Brain Science Translation Innovation and Modulation (brainSTIM) Center and the Laboratory for Cognition and Neural Stimulation (LCNS). The brainSTIM Center is a multidisciplinary community of scientists dedicated to the use of groundbreaking neuromodulation techniques to research, repair, and enhance human brain function, with the mission to create a framework of cooperation that cuts across departmental and institutional boundaries. The LCNS is a cutting-edge noninvasive brain stimulation laboratory dedicated to advancing the fields of cognitive neurology and cognitive neuroscience, and is a constituent neuromodulation group within the brainSTIM Center.

We are seeking a managing director to play an important role in creating synergies between neuromodulation labs, clinics, and centers at Penn. The director will identify resources throughout the university that can be leveraged to achieve the groups' collective goals and advance the centers' strategic plans, while achieving programmatic objectives that enhance cooperation among the centers' constituents, develop corporate partnerships, and to provide strategic guidance to collaborators both internal and external to Penn. This position will also retain a managing leadership role within the LCNS. The LCNS director will direct research team(s) and resources to accomplish specific goals and objectives and work with multiple PIs to ensure that the appropriate infrastructure and quality systems are in place to support all research. The director will advise both the brainSTIM Center and the LCNS management team on all operational activities and ensures that appropriate strategies are aligned with objectives.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • The director is responsible for developing, planning and executing strategic initiatives as well as assisting and collaborating with neuromodulation faculty, research staff, and trainees in a wide variety of activities for the management and advancement of the groups.

  • In conjunction with others in the leadership teams, establish strategic and annual goals driving the groups forward, ensuring operational excellence and alignment with strategic goals.

  • Work with PSOM, the neurology department, and center faculty to develop and implement strategies and initiatives that support the mission, vision, and strategic objectives.

  • Oversee ongoing operations and supervise staff at multiple levels. Create/optimize lab policies, establish objectives, set performance standards, and lead and manage a large team.

  • Supervise and mentor senior research staff to ensure project completion within scope, budget, and to quality standards. Ability to train staff in neuromodulation equipment required.

  • Manage internal and external partnerships as well as serve as a representative at high-level committees and meetings.

  • Maintain up-to-date, in-depth knowledge of the best and emerging practices in neuromodulation and continuing education and presenting on best and emerging technology to internal and external audiences.

  • Develop and maintain partnerships between key stakeholders, corporate interests, and donors.

  • Develop best practices, methods, techniques, and operational standards for clinical research within the groups. Ensure streamlined and standardized processes, eliminate redundancies, and ensure sound financial stewardship of space, equipment, and expenditures.

  • Provide fiscal oversight and budgetary control of multiple funding sources. Partner with departmental finance team to manage approximately 10M in research and philanthropic funds.

  • Responsible for planning activities for specific research programs, including implementation of policies and procedures.

  • Identifying areas for organizational development, updates, or changes.

Qualifications

  • Master of Science and 7 to 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

  • A minimum of 8 to 10 years of leadership/management/supervisory experience within the field of neuromodulation preferred.

  • Expert knowledge of neuromodulation technology.

  • Strategic thinker and planner with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans and drive results.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop industry partnerships.

  • Proven ability to influence and negotiate with key internal and external stakeholders.

  • Adaptable, flexible, with strong interpersonal skills.
