Managing Editor

The San Antonio Report, an award-winning nonprofit news outlet in the nation's seventh-largest city, is seeking a dynamic Managing Editor to oversee daily newsroom operations and high-impact local journalism.The San Antonio Report offers competitive pay, full benefits and generous paid time off, and also embraces a collaborative work culture.

Along with the Editor in Chief, the Managing Editor leads a team of 14 journalists and ensures that the San Antonio Report publishes daily community-minded news, with primary responsibility for the newsroom staff schedule, delivering on the Report's content strategy and upholding our editorial standards.

The Managing Editor is a member of the San Antonio Report's senior leadership team, contributing significantly to organizational strategy and priorities. They also conduct performance reviews with the Editor in Chief, as well as coaching and mentoring team members to improve their skills to benefit the organization.

The ideal candidate will be a talented, versatile journalist and proven newsroom leader, able to sift through the news of the day to determine how best to cover the city of San Antonio across the Report's beats. They will also be adept at allocating staff resources to best align with the mission of informing San Antonians with well-reported coverage on local government and politics, business, development, education, arts and culture, community reporting and more. In big news moments like election nights and breaking stories, the Managing Editor is responsible for developing a strategy to produce excellent news coverage that serves the San Antonio region.

The Managing Editor must have a strong sense of what makes a San Antonio Report story unique, steering our newsroom to produce stories with impact by focusing on where we can add value to the community with thoughtful reporting that readers won't find anywhere else.

SKILL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Minimum 5 years newsroom leadership experience preferred

• Mastery of AP style, grammar and spelling

• Ability to coach and mentor reporters, with a desire to see them grow

• Understanding of digital news analytics and audience development strategies

• Schedule flexibility (some nights, weekend work)

• Spanish proficiency is a plus

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field.

This is a full-time, exempt position and is based in San Antonio, Texas.

The minimum starting salary for this position is $85,000 and is commensurate with experience and skill set. Some of the benefits employees enjoy are generous personal time off, 10 paid holidays, health benefits, a 401(k) plan, and paid parental leave.
