The Managing Director will provide leadership and will support the growth and success of the Pharmaceutical Health Services Research practice area within the Health Division. The incumbent will oversee research, consulting and management activities and will support IMPAQ-wide initiatives, including identification and capture of new business opportunities, delivery and management of projects, and enhancement of organizational culture and development of staff talent and corporate capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Function as an account lead for the Division, identifying and pursuing new business opportunities in the region as well as nationally.

  • Develop new relationships and create new business opportunities.

  • Provide technical review of proposals and company deliverables.

  • Lead projects, as well as participate in the respective Division Senior Management Team.

  • Conduct program evaluations.

  • Perform policy analysis.

  • Supervise and mentor staff.

  • Conduct site visits.

  • Write technical reports and proposals.

  • Make presentations to government clients.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge and Experience

  • Master's Degree in relevant field required, PhD. degree highly desirable.

  • 15+ years of relevant experience managing in a project-based, professional services and consulting firm or similar deadline driven client focused environment.

  • Verifiable record of developing business opportunities in at least one of IMPAQ's core service areas at the Federal, state and/or local levels.

  • Experience leading and managing research, evaluation, technical assistance or consulting projects and mentoring highly-skilled teams.

  • Experience in leading proposals, providing services and preparing reports for government, private sector and non-profit clients.

  • Prior leadership and supervision of a diverse, professional staff of at least 15.

  • Prior experience with government contracts highly preferred.

VIEW JOBS 1/14/2021 12:00:00 AM 2021-04-14T00:00 Description: The Permanente Journal (TPJ), a quarterly online-only publication, advances knowledge in scientific research, clinical medicine and innovative health care delivery via original research, review articles, clinical case reports, commentaries, and editorials. TPJ is published by The Permanente Press, a subsidiary of The Permanente Federation. The Publications Director is expected to provide the overall management of journal operations and to guide and support the strategic development of the journal through the publication of novel, authoritative, and applicable clinical research. In alignment with Permanente Medicine principles, TPJ is expected to embrace innovative measures, evolve with environmental conditions, and cultivate the quality and appeal of TPJ. The Publications Director will report to the Manager, Operations and Special Projects and collaborate closely with TPJ's Editor-in-Chief and Publications Committee. With support from the eight PMGs, TPJ is currently undergoing a rebranding and reorganization, in which the Publications Director is expected to manage through the convening of the TPJ Steering Committee (temporary committee until the relaunch) and other stakeholders. They will also manage the recruitment of a new editor-in-chief (EIC), under the supervision and guidance of TPF leadership and the interim EIC. This position presents an opportunity for a talented scholarly publishing professional to reshape and mold a Kaiser Permanente asset such that it accurately reflects the value and promise of Permanente Medicine to internal and external audiences. Essential Responsibilities: * Editorial and Production Operations: Establish close working relationships with editors, publications committee, and other Kaiser Permanente leaders to inform and advance publishing strategies and operations. * Partner with the EACB Brand and Marketing team and other relevant stakeholders to rebrand TPJ and all associated digital assets. * Support initiatives to develop, implement, and sustain content that drives growth in submissions and users. * Monitor journals in the competitive space and, in collaboration with editors, pursue content and features that will increase the impact of TPJ. * Following industry best practices, manage the process for editor-in-chief recruitment or renewal (usually every five years) in conjunction with TPF stakeholders and the publications/search committee. * Provide necessary oversight to ensure an on-time, quality publication. Provide reports and context to inform editors of publishing trends, citation and usage analyses, and analysis of the competitive environment to facilitate the journal's continued growth and success. * Establish reporting process with regular reporting to publications committee to support their review of editor performance and journal policies. * Lead initiatives to understand and optimize the author and reader experience around process, policy, and utilization of journal content. * Provide oversight of publishing service vendors to ensure that editors, reviewers, and authors are well-supported in their work and that editorial strategies are developed and deployed. * Facilitate, attend, and take minutes for editorial board, publications committee, and any other publications-related meetings, as needed. * Work with editor-in-chief and other stakeholders to ensure journal policies reflect the highest ethical standards and manage issues as necessary. * Provide oversight of social media initiatives. * Publishing/Business management: Develop strategic growth initiatives, providing supporting rationale and financial projections. * Manage requests for proposal for publishing services that includes an online platform with search-engine optimization and a focus on driving submissions and usage. * Keep abreast of technologies, legislation, and industry initiatives of importance to TPJ; represent TPJ in the medical, scientific, publishing, legislative, and field-specific communities. * Monitor and guide staff and editor performance, and maintain climate that attracts, retains, and motivates top-quality personnel and volunteers. * Monitor performance of publishing service providers to ensure compliance with contract terms, adherence to service commitments and industry best practices, and financial efficiency. * Alert service providers of intention to auto-renew, renegotiate, or terminate agreements as per contract terms; renegotiate contract or issue RFP as agreed with management and editorial leadership. * Prepare annual journal budgets and reforecasts as necessary; monitor monthly journal finances, report on variances; and track year-on-year trends. * Review and approve journal-related invoices. * Communicate TPJ financial status and relevant changes in the publication's marketplace to TPF management. * Ensure journal is produced and promoted in a high-quality, cost-effective manner. Basic Qualifications: Experience * At least ten (10) years of experience with editorial and business aspects of scholarly publishing including digital production, marketing, and finance. Education * Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public health, or business administration OR a minimum four (4) years of experience in a directly related field. * High School Diploma OR General Education Development (GED) License, Certification, Registration * N/A Additional Requirements: * Experience translating intellectual assets and research deliverables into publications; and a keen understanding of business plan development and budgets. * Strategic/business development experience in publishing, preferably in health care or scientific publishing, demonstrating progressive responsibility and accomplishment. * Strong leadership, negotiation skills, and demonstrated ability to unite staff and subject matter experts around common goals. * Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to present and articulate complex issues and situations in clear and understandable terms. * Outstanding interpersonal and political skills to work internally and externally with a wide variety of constituencies. * Proficiency in MS office suite (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and adaptable to new office technologies. Preferred Qualifications: * Master's degree a plus. * Strong knowledge of American health care delivery models preferred. * Superior written and verbal communication skills. * Excellent project management skills. * Ability to work collaboratively with senior level executives and various stakeholder groups. * Demonstrated ability to work across functions, building relationships to drive results. * Proven track record of working in a fast-paced environment with multiple varying projects at a given time.
