Job Summary

Program in the Environment (PitE) is seeking an experienced and highly qualified Managing Director. Reporting to the Director of PitE, the Managing Director will provide strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for activities related to academic and student services for PitE Undergraduate students. We seek a proven leader with exceptional interpersonal, communication, and management skills; demonstrated excellence in the design and delivery of services that foster personal, academic, and professional development for a diverse community of students and a commitment to the mission and values of SEAS and the University of Michigan.


Strategic Direction

  • Participate with the PitE Director on development projects, long-range planning and promotional activities for PitE. Work with the PitE Director to develop strategic direction for programming to ensure it is consistent with PitE's mission.

  • Identify and implement opportunities to enhance the program by researching the external market, consulting resources within the SEAS and the University. Perform strategic analysis to support the long-term goals of the program, monitoring enrollment trends and overseeing enrollment projection processes.

Program Development

  • Work closely with PitE Director and other faculty to identify curriculum changes and enhancements. Work with faculty to develop new courses and oversee curricular development. Serve as the point of contact for curricular and co-curricular issues and respond with appropriate problem-solving strategies and protocols. Oversee approvals process for curricular and programmatic changes through both SEAS and LSA
  • Work with staff and faculty to develop workshops, extracurricular activities, or other programs to complement and build on the PitE classroom experience.

Relationship Management

  • Work collaboratively with the SEAS DEI office to foster a collaborative, inclusive, and quality student experience, while promoting the values of pluralism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and multiculturalism.

  • Collaborate with SEAS and LSA to provide high quality services and support to PitE students. Collaborate with the variety of units on campus that have environmentally-oriented missions to enhance the PitE experience and foster the culture for environmentally-minded undergraduate students.

  • Act as an ambassador to groups around campus to promote our program, collaborate on programs of interest to PitE students, and to set up systems for cooperating and sharing. Act as a liaison on various university committees. Act as an ambassador to internal and external constituents to promote the Program and to set up systems for cooperating and sharing. Initiate and develop strong relationships with faculty, staff, students, donors, alumni, and other constituents.

  • Coordinate with various SEAS and LSA units such as Student Affairs, Communications, Finance, Development and Alumni Relations in integrating our programmatic efforts. Work closely with SEAS student affairs staff to discover synergies between the graduate and undergraduate programs.

Management of the Program Office

  • Recruit, motivate, and lead staff members, manage the professional development of the team, and provide cultural leadership to ensure a high level of service and a responsive environment. Manage the day-to-day operational needs of the PitE student affairs office, including student advising, student financial aid, course catalog development, GSI recruitment and appointment process. Ensure student and instructor needs are met.

  • Coordinate with SEAS and LSA Communications teams to maintain PitE digital presence ensuring optimal visibility of the program to prospective students.

  • Work collaboratively with SEAS Finance to establish and manage the PitE annual operating budget. Advise the Director regarding optimal uses of financial resources for planning and management discussions.

  • Work collaboratively with SEAS Human Resources to develop job descriptions, review positions for appropriate classifications and salary ranges. Analyze and evaluate the administrative staffing needs of the program and make recommendations to the PitE Director. Provide oversight for procedures related to faculty recruitment, appointments, review, retention and promotion for PitE joint faculty. Assist and provide guidance to the PitE Director with requests for promotions, LEO lecturer appointments and renewals, sabbatical and other leaves, and emeritus status. Create and update MOUs to specify research, teaching, and service commitments for joint faculty.

  • Coordinate PitE faculty meetings and agendas, act as a resource regarding PitE governance procedures. Occasionally presenting on progress of initiatives to PitE faculty and key stakeholders

  • Serve as a liaison for administrative matters to SEAS and LSA.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in higher education, business administration or related field is required, or Bachelor's degree with 5-7 years of related experience.

  • 5-7 years experience of demonstrated program or project management experience within the higher education community required.

  • Excellent change management skills to guide administrative and personnel transitions.

  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships and effective channels of communication at multiple levels inside and outside the organization.

  • Analytic and critical thinking skills with demonstrated ability in problem identification and resolution.

  • Some experience in fiscal management and in preparing and monitoring budgets.

  • Demonstrated managerial, team leadership, and problem-solving skills are essential.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage various aspects of a complex organization and proven ability to successfully supervise and mentor a variety of individuals

  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a program leader, staff mentor, and partner to the PitE Director.
