Position Overview

City Year has relied on its corporate, foundation and individual partners to create sustainable social impact, leveraging both private and public investors. With a wide range of support from some of San Antonio's philanthropic leaders, City Year San Antonio has a strong fundraising track record and an ambitious fundraising plan for growth over the next 3 years. A focus on establishing multi-year contributions, identifying new funding sources and management of current donors will be expected.

Reporting to the Vice President and Executive Director of City Year San Antonio, the Managing Director of Development oversees the activities of the Development department. The Managing Director of Development (MDD) will assist the Executive Director with site financial priorities with a focus on prioritizing contributions and donations. The MDD will lead a team of 2 high-performing development professionals to manage and implement the fundraising strategy for the San Antonio office. A specific emphasis is placed on managing and building relationships with corporations and foundations, as well as with high net worth individuals and prospects in an effort to maximize financial resources to help City Year San Antonio achieve its revenue and strategic objectives. The role is responsible for ensuring the site meets its annual fundraising budget goals, with a focus on achieving over $1.6 million in revenue from private sources annually.

Job Description

Responsibilities

People Management:

  • Hire, manage, and retain a team of development professionals.

  • Oversee the performance management process and ensure staff members complete in a timely manner the performance management procedures and support them in reaching their individual development plan goals.

Relationship Cultivation and Fundraising Management:

  • Build meaningful relationships that result in securing both monetary and in-kind multi-year support for City Year San Antonio.

  • Able to develop and grow a transactional relationship into a transformational relationship.

  • Develop, implement and monitor progress toward sustainable short- and long-term fundraising strategies and goals.

  • Oversee and support Corporate Partnerships and Major Gifts Development fundraising efforts from $5k to $100k+.

  • Develop successful identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies to direct and monitor the progress of current and future donor relationships.

  • Serve as the organization's public representative, cultivating relationships with community members, including prospective gift-givers, to build awareness of and commitment to City Year San Antonio's work.

  • Maintain oversight over all fundraising activities, including major giving, grants, special events, direct mail appeals, and corporate partnership initiatives.

Board Management and Engagement:

  • Participate in quarterly Board of Directors meetings and prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports as requested by the Executive Director and Board.

  • Work with the Board of Directors on development-related projects.

Marketing and Communications:

  • Experience crafting communication on behalf of others with a keen awareness of audience and impact.

  • Ability to manage and execute compelling communication tools that drive people to support and champion City Year San Antonio, including press releases, media advisories, social media communication, and marketing events.

  • Experience communicating with both internal and external audiences of varying levels of seniority.

Organization Management:

  • As a member of the executive leadership team, assist in shaping organizational strategy and serve in a leadership role in implementing the site's strategic plan.

  • Manage the process for implementing, reviewing, and modifying City Year San Antonio's strategic plan to ensure departmental and site-wide progress is met and remains aligned with staff capacity, financial resources, and stakeholder support.

  • Work collaboratively with other site departments regularly along with City Year Headquarters.

  • Develop and manage the Development Department budget, detailing department revenue and expenses.

  • Oversee accurate maintenance of records and donor information in Salesforce

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required and Master's Degree highly preferred

  • Strong and proven track record of raising funds from diverse sources, including major gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations

  • At least 5 years of team management/leadership experience with a focus on strong interpersonal, supervision, administration and management skills

  • Excellent organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to problem solve and think critically

  • Demonstrated commitment to accountability, measuring outcomes and a results-oriented culture

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and writing)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and familiarity with donor tracking systems (i.e. Salesforce)

  • Results-focused, highly organized self-starter who works effectively with others and independently

  • Excellent strategic planning and project management skills

  • Experience with navigating a complex political landscape and developing relationships with key stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to lead manager and directors in creation and implementation of multi-faceted operating plans
