This individual will be responsible for providing leadership/direction over a team of underwriters. This will include supervising Underwriting Team(s) to ensure underwriters appraise and underwrite applications for insurance, assess mortality and morbidity risk within company guidelines, assure equitable treatment of proposed insured's and producers, and meet the company's financial objectives. This position will also ensure underwriters approve, classify or decline applications on his or her own signature. Provide guidance to the underwriters, field force and home office staff regarding underwriting philosophy and requirements, and enhance field relationship management and problem resolution. Recognize and address trends and patterns that positively or negatively impact risk management. Mentor and develop the Underwriting Consultant(s) and/or Underwriters, support the development and training of the underwriters, and support developmental action plans. The position will be responsible for leading a team of approximately 5 - 15 team members (scope depends on overall responsibilities and case complexities and will report to a Director.
Primary Responsibilities include the following:
Supports/promotes mission of Underwriting Department to all associates/customers; works closely with management and project teams to roll-out strategic initiatives
Supports improving our business performance by effectively managing to mortality and quality goals
Instills a Holistic Underwriting Philosophy with the team
Special projects as assigned and develop actions plans and execute successfully within agreed upon delivery dates
Active participation in departmental training and staff meetings and respectively exchange ideas and be receptive to other ideas and opinions
Monitor departmental, team and individual performance results with an eye on achieving goals
Manage mortality of team(s) within expected standards utilizing quality audit results
Collaborates across teams with other UW Team Managers to ensure consistency in underwriting philosophy
Internally, look to eliminate any silos between underwriting and other departments and seek collaborative opportunities
Lead and direct a team by driving performance at all levels, leading by example and influencing change by demonstrating strategic and forward thinking
Develop, coach and mentor assigned Underwriter Consultant(s) and/or Underwriters
Conduct routine monthly team meetings and one-on-ones with team members focused on development and sharing of organizational and departmental information to demonstrate transparency when possible
Conduct monthly "check in" with Consultant(s) regarding team member performance and developmental opportunities
Review UQA Results and identify any coaching opportunities with the Underwriter Consultant
Conduct timely and thorough case reviews on all escalations or relooks characterized by well thought out sound consistent offers the first time; share any underwriter improvement opportunities with the UW Consultant
Work closely with the UW Consultant(s) on the continuous development of team members
Proactively work with the individual team members not meeting quality goals utilizing departmental resources such as the Underwriting Consultant, the Underwriting Quality Assessment Team, Medical Directors, Trainer and the Financial Due Diligence Team
Maintain personal production of Referral/2nd signature cases or consults within quality standards
Support the UW Consultant(s) with coaching and training activities geared towards the collective QC results of team members
Clear, concise documentation and communication of consultations and decisions
Manage Referral/2nd signature cases or other consults within 1 business day
Workflow management: Manage team(s) queues and or team members to handle work within service level goals and manage carry over trends focusing on individuals with persistent carryover
Maintain and ensure an efficient workflow and optimize all available resources
Collaborate with other Managing Chief Underwriters to assess case inventory and support organizational capacity needs
Meet individual team member targeted training and development goals
Coach Underwriters on best verbal and written communications
Emphasize and execute on a "no surprise" communications strategy with customers to include timely communication for tentative quotes and case updates
Conduct field force training sessions as needed
Participate as needed on any customer onboarding calls by showcasing our strengths and building a productive work relationship
Participate in industry educational opportunities and AXA specific courses
Seek continuous learning opportunities; establish and execute a Personal Development Plan, both short term and long term; partner with Director to identify internal as well as external opportunities to broaden knowledge and capabilities
Actively seek and participate in opportunities to attend customer conferences and meetings and present and /or facilitate customer engagement discussions.
Minimum 10+ years' experience applying Life underwriting knowledge: medical terminology, medicine, medical science and symptomology, non-medical and financial risk selection methodologies, MIB, legal and regulatory limitations, contractual provisions, products, morbidity and mortality, underwriting guidelines, manuals, and operating system. Strong background in impaired risk and financial underwriting; possess a Life Approval Authority Limit of at least $10 million; life experience to include 65+ and Large Case Experience a plus; EKG interpretation certification; knowledge of Insurance Industry Operations and Regulations. Advanced Knowledge of AXA's Proprietary Systems, UW Websites, and Manuals; intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint; strong affinity for operational and performance metrics.
People management experience a plus to include a strong understanding of performance and operational management; experience or ability managing individual performance and coaching and developing individuals; hold individuals accountable; strong leadership, planning and execution and results oriented; experience or ability to build high performance customer centric teams.
Excellent communication (verbal and written), team building, and strong interpersonal and customer engagement skills; ability to present to internal and external audiences and tailor message according to audience; consistently organizes and expresses ideas/assessments clearly and concisely.
Demonstrate leadership role in department, supporting mission and providing excellent internal and external customer service skills including patience, diplomacy, tactfulness, ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, effective listening skills and professionalism; proven ability to mentor, train, and develop underwriters to positively affect decisions though consultation, negotiation, and recommendations. Ability to provide honest, candid and respectful feedback in a timely fashion. Build trust by treating others with respect, offers to help and/or assist others to achieve goals; ability to provide strong leadership, high performance team building, coaching, and performance management capabilities; experience or ability to lead or participate on strategic initiatives or projects.
Bachelor's Degree preferred plus a FALU and FLMI preferred. If does not have a FALU or FLMI, possess and/or display a willingness to obtain the designations; actively engaged on career development that could include actively working towards a CLU, participating on a local Underwriting Association Board or other industry related function, industry related presentations, meeting facilitation, and people management leadership.
