Altria Client Services role is to provide high-quality services to the Altria family of companies. We are currently seeking a highly qualified Manager, Tax to join our Corporate Tax Department in Richmond, VA. This position will provide support for the compliance function, transactional and operational planning, mergers and acquisitions, benefits, and audits. The Manager, Tax is responsible for the highest degree of accuracy, timeliness and accountability for compliance, recommending and implementing strategies to minimize the tax burden and potential liability of the company in full compliance with all laws and regulations.

Job Duties:

  • Helping to manage federal and state income tax compliance and tax provisions.

  • Providing analysis, risk assessment and recommendations on complex tax issues concerning proposed acquisitions, reorganizations and other business transactions.

  • Providing results of this analysis through written memoranda and oral presentations.

  • Performing project-oriented tax research and analysis supporting the Federal, International and State tax groups.

  • Analyzing, responding to, and negotiating issues related to international, federal and state audits.

  • Analyzing the impact of changes to the federal and state tax laws, new regulations, and court decisions and presenting those effects to the company as well as any strategic recommendations due to the changes.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.

  • Master's or Juris Doctorate is desirable.

  • A minimum of four years of experience with a consistent track record of contribution and accomplishment in the field of taxation.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current tax law and regulations.

  • Adapt quickly and work independently as well as in teams.

  • Well-developed analytical skills, deadline driven, ability to conduct research and report information.

  • The ability to accommodate occasional travel and overtime during peak periods and at other times as needed.

  • The ability to efficiently handle multiple assignments/projects simultaneously, often under strict time deadlines.

Job Summary: Markel Corporation, a Fortune 500 Company, is seeking a Sr. (or Lead) Tax Accountant - Global Tax Planning & International for the Richmond, VA Headquarters office! This role is responsible for compliance with US international tax aspects of US GAAP reporting, ensuring that Markel's global financial statements accurately reflect the impact of tax. He/she is expected to oversee the US international components of Markel's federal income tax return. The role focuses on developing and assists with implementing process improvements which support the global tax provision and tax return compliance processes for Markel. The Sr./Lead Tax role will report to the Senior Director of Global Tax Planning & Strategy and also focuses on the identification and implementation of global tax planning strategies and tax savings opportunities. Responsibilities: * Identify and support implementation of global tax planning and tax savings opportunities. * Ensure that our external service providers have the data needed to prepare Markel's US international income tax returns on a timely basis and review these returns once prepared. * Prepare or perform first level review of Markel's quarterly and annual international tax components of the provision, ensuring compliance with US GAAP * Identify process improvement opportunities within the global tax provision and compliance processes and assist with the implementation of those improvements under the direction of the Tax leadership team. * Oversee US International tax return compliance. * Collaborate with accounting and finance department team members, as appropriate Requirements: * Bachelors of Arts or Science degree in Accounting or equivalent (eg Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Accounting) * Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license a plus. * 3-5 years of experience in Corporate Tax/Accounting or Public Accounting. * Comfortable working with various software applications including Oracle and OneSource income tax provision. * Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to translate and communicate technical tax issues to non-tax professionals.
