Job Summary:

Markel is seeking a talented and passionate leader to join our growing digital team. We want a hands-on, technically-capable, delivery focused leader who is passionate about building software. This role manages multiple agile teams that focus on all aspects of delivery for direct to consumer digital technology from strategic investments and new product deployments to daily operations.

What you'll do

  • Lead multiple agile teams in coordination with product delivery and Markel operations.

  • Work closely with a variety of stakeholders (IT and business) to ensure that the design and software deployment aligns with market needs.

  • Identify emerging technologies and practices and determine how to best apply them to the successful delivery of Markel's digital strategy.

  • Act as a thought leader in the advancement of digital product and customer experience.

  • Maintain a balance between building sustainable, high-impact digital customer solutions and shipping things quickly.

  • Instill a spirit of continuous improvement in all aspects of the team design, code, automation and deployment

  • Provide overarching vision into the technical and functional delivery of the product maintain the digital roadmap in partnership with the product team.

  • Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of your team members. Help develop and contribute towards their careers and professional goals.

  • Manage operating costs of digital technology and services, ensuring appropriate budgeting and assist in determining ways to be more cost effectively deliver product increments.

About you

  • As the leader, you will need to understand how to apply technologies in categories such as:

  • Cloud Computing Services (Azure, AWS, etc.)

  • Performance and Scaling Techniques

  • Data Integration Patterns

  • Microservices

  • A team player, keen to coach others and share ideas with your team and across the broader IT organization

  • Strong technical background with a passion for technology and customer design

Some things you have experience with

  • At least 5 years of managing teams of software engineers and experience in people management

  • Managing and leading high performing teams utilizing agile delivery methodologies and scaled agile framework

  • Experience with the cloud technologies (Azure, AWS, etc), CI/CD implementations and techniques, test automation and DevOps feedback loops

  • Working knowledge of client side frameworks (Angular, Foundation, etc), API design and development, database (SQL and NoSql) and security design considerations

  • Experience building complex, scalable, high-performance software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers.

  • Leveraging metrics to analyze and optimize system performance.

  • Working in a fast-paced environment across multiple work streams.

  • Demonstrated collaboration, strong analytical and product management skills.

VIEW JOBS 11/16/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-14T00:00 This position is a 12-month tenure-eligible hybrid faculty position in the VCUarts Cinema Program in collaboration with the Department of Communication Arts with an academic rank of Assistant Professor. Responsibilities include the development and teaching of new undergraduate courses in the Cinema Program and in the Department of Communication Arts and across VCUarts in support of collaborative undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Teaching will also be expected in the Cinema Program's eight-week Summer Intensive Experience, which is a short semester comprised of production intensive courses in which students form crews of anywhere from 50-70 people to make four to six short films on 35mm. VCUarts is dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic faculty committed to teaching and working in a multicultural and inclusive environment and strongly encourages applications from all racial/ethnic, gender and social identities. The Assistant Professor for Pre-visualization, Digital Cinema, VFX look development, and VFX postproduction will combine their creative research with activism and entrepreneurship at the community, national or international level, with a focus on equity, diversity, social and racial justice and/or visual literacy, and will use their art production, analysis and imaginations to enact their most revolutionary and utopian ideals. The faculty member is expected to: provide leadership by mentoring student artists; foster collaborative curriculum and research across the arts and broader campus; promote methods to utilize and grow research and production facilities and other assets in support of research and teaching, secure external funding, demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience, integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and research tools; and generate national and international academic, community and industry partnerships. The faculty member must demonstrate an active professional career, and creative activities should be related to the program's curriculum and be consistent with and support the broader mission and initiatives of the collaborating departments, School, and University. The faculty member will provide service to the departments and School, such as directing and assisting with student, department and school-wide related activities such as contributions to the website, portfolio reviews, coordination of student activities and student exhibitions, and serving on School/University committees. Minimum Qualifications ?MA/MFA/MS or the equivalent professional experience and training. ?Five (5+) years of relevant experience in visual effects for motion pictures, television, music videos, and/or commercials. ?Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU. ?Expertise in the planning and capture of photographic elements for visual effects. These areas include: essential camera operation; scene data collection; CG integration; miniature and forced-perspective photography; blue and green-screen photography; use of motion control technology; on-set protocol; and the planning and construction of special effects rigs for visual effects. ?Familiarity with current trends and technological developments in pre-visualization, digital cinema, VFX look development, VFX image gathering, including real-time rendering, real-time raytracing, and other VFX postproduction techniques. ?The faculty member will be required to have an established research/professional agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as appropriate, and potential for scholarship or creative expression that complements and expands existing expertise in the department and School. ?Expert in Maya, Houdini, Nuke, After Effects or equivalent. ?Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Special Requirements The days when visual effects and high-end postproduction belonged exclusively to big budget cinema are history. VFX are now used extensively in almost every type of television and cinematic presentation; in a wide variety of genres (including narrative and experimental cinema).
