Starz is looking for a manager to build a new team of cross functional engineers to improve the release quality and platform stability of our media encode pipeline. We are rapidly transitioning to a fully cloud based platform and need a team that can build out monitoring, deployment, and scaling for our media encode pipeline. You will work closely with Software Development, Cloud Infrastructure, and Operations teams to increase our velocity and stability. This team is on-call to support the system and ensure 24x7 operation.

Site Reliability Engineering is an engineering discipline that combines software development and systems engineering to build and run scalable, highly distributed, fault tolerant systems. The SRE team ensures that the Starz media encode pipeline is stable, scalable, and operational 24x7. The SRE team will create software solutions to monitor the pipeline and optimize the platform through automation.

The SRE manager will need the technical skillset to get into the trenches with the staff while possessing the leadership capability to drive change across the organization. You will need to interface with and drive change through Development to improve the platform, Operations to decrease workload, and Cloud Infrastructure to increase reliability. Strong communication, process-oriented thinking, and ability to adapt in a rapidly changing environment will be required for the role.


  • Learn the entire content pipeline applications suite and share that knowledge with the cross functional teams

  • Partner with teams from across the organization to help tackle hard problems

  • Perform analysis, troubleshooting, instrumentation for the content pipeline

  • Create standardized processes for all applications in the pipeline.

  • Develop new software-based solutions to engineering problems

  • Hiring, coaching, goal-setting, and professional development of site reliability engineers

Required Skills

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or equivalent experience

  • Strong sense of ownership, customer service, and integrity demonstrated through clear communication and positive action.

  • Solid understanding of systems and application design, including the operational trade-offs of various designs

  • Knowledge of various aspects of service design: including messaging protocols & behavior, caching strategies and software design practices

  • Willingness to contribute to the overall SRE and platform direction and act as a key contributor to executive staff

  • Ability to lead a lean, highly effective organization, making strategic trade-offs that are in priority when needed.

  • Develop and grow talented operations engineers ranging from junior to senior levels of experience

  • You have excellent written communication, interpersonal communication, and documentation
