Position Summary

Summary:

This position serves as a manager for Information Technology, responsible for reliable application delivery through multiple IT data centers, all computing and storage infrastructure including servers, SAN arrays, and networking appliances. Directly supervises all activities involving the support of information systems server infrastructure.

Facilitates the selection, evaluation, and implementation of information systems infrastructure and assists in strategic and operational planning. Assists with or directly manages key strategic projects as needed. This position is also a top-level technical resource for the organization's server and application virtualization infrastructure technology stack and related services, and is responsible for the enterprise-wide monitoring and management of server and system storage architecture.

Responsibilities include: analyzing and recommending capital and operational budget, long range planning and projects to meet business needs, hiring, mentoring and managing team members building and supporting server, storage, database and data center technologies, project management of team's technical tasks, assisting with long and short term strategic and operational planning for infrastructure, reviewing staff job performance and assignment of responsibilities, serving as liaison to customers and providing technical problem solving skills. Ensures appropriate resources are utilized in a prioritized and effective manner across project and operational support activities. Promotes teamwork and communication between staff, management, clinicians and stakeholders while maintaining high standards and customer satisfaction.

Work closely with staff, vendors and others to provide a systems infrastructure that meets the needs of the organization; assist in establishing policies, procedures and standards for the use of the server infrastructure; ensure that critical business functions are protected from disruption due to system failure or unavailability; ensure that enterprise applications have appropriate data backup, recovery, high-availability, performance, and planning/testing of disaster recovery scenarios; act as a top level technical consultant to others in various areas of expertise.

ESSENTIAL:

Responsibilities:

(45%)* Supervises infrastructure server and database support staff, including development of short and long term goals. Reviews and updates goals and objectives periodically as needed. Performs all job review functions for direct reports.

(30%)* Works collaboratively with system, network, database administrators and application support personnel to support business applications and strategic initiatives. Recommends and prepares equipment configurations for additions and modifications to the server and storage infrastructure technology stack to meet the needs of applications and users consistent with established organizational standards and practices. Prepares and reports on server/storage system availability and related projects status.

(25%)* Establishes, refines, and implements the standards, policies and procedures for installing, securing, designing, tuning, monitoring, and managing server and storage platforms. This is to ensure adequate resources are available and properly configured to deliver optimal performance, availability, reliability, and integrity.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads the development, implementation, communication and compliance monitoring of policies and procedures relating to the use, operation and deployment of system infrastructure in conformance with MidMichigan standards.

Investigates, recommends, plans and implements system and storage architecture and protocols.

Management of Health System data centers and all servers, physical and virtual. Oversee data center electrical systems and sub-systems to include generator and UPS devices at each facility.

Act as primary point of contact for all fire suppression systems, electrical, and HVAC concerns within the data centers.

Oversee routing maintenance in the data centers, including but not limited to power and cooling, fire suppression, generator operations, and general cleanliness of environments.

Following best practices, monitors capacity and performance and makes recommendations for improvements.

Investigates opportunities and develops proposals to take advantage of system and storage technologies that best meet needs of the organization. Leads and participates in teams to implement projects throughout the organization.

Leads troubleshooting and problem solving efforts for a broad range of IT technical issues and involving a number of IT related disciplines. Consults with users, IT staff and others on system issues and capabilities and other areas within expertise.

Develops and tests disaster recovery plans for various systems and infrastructure services and components. Develops and implements backup strategies appropriate to application tier and user needs.

Working with system administrators and vendors, analyze, recommend, plan and provision appropriate types and amount of technology capacity to meet the needs of systems, users and applications. Analyze, recommend and assist in implementation of new hardware and system software.

Ensures that the system high availability options are properly configured, well documented, tested and successfully executed to maximize system availability. Ensure system backups, restores, and disaster recovery processes are adequately documented and tested as part of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning.

Adheres to Change Management standards.

Participates in call rotation for IT management.

Qualifications

Education:

Essential:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Business, Health Care or STEM related field required. Master's degree preferred. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS

A minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience in: system operations, storage or server administration or technical support in a Windows/Linux Enterprise environment, virtual server environments such as VMWare or Citrix.

A minimum of three (3) years management experience coaching, guiding, mentoring and leading at least five (5) staff as direct reports is required and budget planning.

Expert level knowledge of and extensive experience with the following are required: Windows and Linux server operating systems, fiber channel storage area networks, SAN frames, modular server hardware systems such as Cisco UCS blades, server security, data center best practices, TCP/IP, Active Directory, Internet, user authentication, including Radius, SSO and SAML. Attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively with both technical and non-technical individuals.

Leadership, project management, use of methodology, time management and organizational skills to direct Windows/Linux/AIX Server tasks across the project team and Storage across the organization.

Demonstrated ability to lead high visibility projects, to work effectively and carefully under pressure, to meet project deadlines, to learn independently, to communicate effectively with a variety of people and to write well is required. Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills are required.

Interpersonal and presentation skills needed to communicate successfully both orally and in writing with individuals / groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

SAN and storage architecture design, implementation, support and management experience in an enterprise is strongly preferred.

VMWare Certified Professional (VCP) preferred.

CCNA Data center certififcation preferred.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
