Job Summary:

Oversees day to day operations of the department while performing escalated or complex respiratory care duties. Assists the Director with regulatory compliance.

Responsible for the clinical outcomes and patient/physician satisfaction with the department services. Provides oversight of scheduling, hiring, counseling and growth of the respiratory care staff. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in healthcare/medical related field: Required

  • Master's Degree: Preferred

  • Five years' clinical experience in an acute care setting: Required

  • One year's leadership experience: Required

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner: Required

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification: Required

Facility Specific License/Certifications:

  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP): Required

Essential Functions:

  • Directs and coordinates department activities and staffing assignments for patient care, reassessing needs throughout the shift and making adjustments as needed. Assesses and prepares staffing schedules that meet departmental needs for all shifts as needed.

    Monitors and evaluates employee performance and productivity to ensure proper work levels of quality and quantity are maintained. Delegates work assignments accordingly. Ensures highest priorities are accomplished according to deadlines.

  • Develops goals and objectives that are aligned with strategic and operational initiatives. Monitors organizational needs and adjusts priorities/actions to meet changing environment.

    Takes corrective action upon identified need/potential problem. Determines needed preparation prior to each meeting or appointment. Ensures all pertinent materials, reports, etc. are assembled and reviewed prior to meeting. Completes projects/tasks within the established deadlines and demonstrates ability to successfully handle a variety of tasks/projects simultaneously.

  • Ensures departmental standards/safety practices are maintained. Ensures all departmental members demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to, good personal safety practices.

    Inspects working environment for safety conditions and adherence to work practice controls. Immediately initiates corrective action/ensures follow-up for any discrepancies, safety infringements, hazardous conditions, etc. Uses consistent exercise of discretion and judgment.

  • Disciplines personnel, when appropriate, through the issuance of oral and written reprimands, and suspensions. Utilizes evaluation tool to acknowledge employee's/supervisor's areas of strengths and to help individual identify areas of improvement, offering valid suggestions on how to improve performance.

    Ensures the supervised personnel are timely provided with meal periods and authorized and permitted to take rest periods. Adjust staffing as necessary. Interfaces with vendors regarding supplies and equipment making purchase recommendations to administrative personnel.

  • Reviews, revise and approves departmental policies according to established organizational timeframes. Coordinates improvement programs for the department to meet regulatory agency standards along with providing statistical reports and updates.

    Works closely with medical staff to facilitate positive working relationships and contribute to optimal team cohesiveness. Exercises discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance, evaluating and comparing possible courses-of-action, and making decisions/recommendations after considering the various possibilities.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
