Job Description:

The Regional Laboratory Operations Manager works closely with the Laboratory Technical Director of Tennessee Oncology within the framework of the objectives and policies established, to plan and coordinate clinical laboratory services. This position assures successful realization of laboratory goals, implementation and sustainment of laboratory projects and initiatives to optimize patient care and satisfaction and guarantee expected operations and regulatory standards are followed/met. The Regional Laboratory Operations Manager leads the development and implementation of staff training and regulatory programs related to laboratory services. In the absence of the Laboratory Technical Director, the Regional Laboratory Operations Manager assumes responsibility for the clinical scope of the LTD's responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages all regulatory, compliance and competency aspects of the assigned laboratory department operations effectively and efficiently.

  • Manages laboratory clinical operations team to include Laboratory Clinical Operations Managers and Team Leads when they are performing assigned lead duties.

  • Assigns, reviews, and maintains documentation of mock inspections performed by Laboratory Clinical Operations Managers and Team Leads.

  • Meets with lab clinical operations team weekly at a minimum to

  • Review changes/updates in laboratory operations,

  • Ensure training for lab staff are provided for changes in processes

  • Ensure competency assessments are current for all lab staff

  • Review findings from Mock Inspections and suggest opportunities for improvement when needed

  • Monitors laboratory clinical operations which will include problem solving issues and ensuring effective processing.

  • Works with clinical operations leadership to resolve laboratory technical or operating issues.

  • Organizes and directs quality assurance functions in close co-operation with the laboratory and clinical management teams.

  • Works with laboratory management, educators, team leads and clinical operations leadership to ensure laboratory personnel are adequately trained and performs competency assessments as required by CLIA and other regulating agencies.

  • Lead and/or participates in CLIA inspections for clinical laboratories

  • May assign competency and/or CLIA inspections to staff as needed

  • Monitors and verifies the compliance of laboratory staff regarding maintaining required licenses and certifications, as applicable.

  • Performs employee relations functions effectively to promote a positive work environment, influence retention and enhance communication.

  • Establishes an environment that promotes recognition and retention for direct reporting employees.

  • Communicates effectively and provides feedback to direct reporting staff which may include department meetings, individual employee meetings, etc.

  • Provides reports to the Laboratory Technical Director bi-weekly to provide updates on clinical operations and develop strategies for issues identified

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to make independent decisions, process information accurately, manage multiple projects simultaneously and be organized.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills required.

  • Strong computer skills especially with Excel and Word spreadsheets.

  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of laboratory testing procedures and practice.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Demonstrates understanding of proper quality control procedures, use of control materials, and documentation of QC results and corrective actions.

  • Demonstrates understanding of proper regulatory and compliance requirements under CLIA, COLA, etc.

  • Possesses skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Principles of organization

  • Theories of management

  • Human resources management

  • Strategies of laboratory management

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Current State of Tennessee Medical Laboratory Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) License required

  • General Supervisor licensure through the State of Tennessee is required

  • Meets CLIA qualification requirements as General Supervisor and/or Technical Supervisor/Consultant

  • Experience and knowledge concerning CLIA/OSHA and other regulatory requirements for laboratory operation

  • Maintains appropriate continuing education for certification and licensure.

  • At least four years of laboratory experience with a minimum of two years in laboratory management
