POSITION SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to ensure the proper costing, valuation and accounting of petroleum products purchased and produced, as well as in inventory, for the Petroleum segment (exclusive of crude oil). The incumbent's accountabilities will include reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, cash flow and income/expense forecasts and preparation of management reports. This position will work closely with the operating business unit managers to ensure timely identification and resolution of financial issues and develop procedures and controls that are effective and efficient.

Reporting to the Assistant Controller Refining, this position is responsible for the accounting and reporting on certain aspects of the commercial components of the Company's refining and marketing business. Specifically, this person will oversee the timely and accurate completion of energy, trading, and risk management (ETRM) recognition, general ledger accounting (including costing and valuation), and periodic reporting for:

  • Production, purchases, and bulk sales of petroleum refined products, renewable fuels, ethanol and blend stocks.

Additionally, this person and his/her team will assist the Assistant Controller Refining and peers in the group in the areas of commercial or operations accounting required to ensure the timely and accurate accounting for the Company's refining and marketing business. This role will also assist, as requested, in leading components of cross-functional activities associated with the accounting function's shared services (e.g. accounts payable, billings), corporate accounting, asset accounting and SEC reporting groups. This individual will be expected to have complete functional and technical knowledge of the transactions over which she/he is responsible, have a complete understanding of accounting processes and systems within his/her area of responsibility, ensure SOX compliance across all activities within his/her area of responsibility, and develop strong relationships with the front office, middle office, operational, accounting management, and internal and external auditors. This role will be the key point of contact for the front and middle office parts of the Company for all areas within his/her area of responsibility. This individual will be expected to be a thought leader in relation to accounting processes, systems and technical matters by his/her staff, the Assistant Controller Refining, and the Chief Accounting Officer.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required.

  • Master's Degree or Professional Accounting Certification preferred.

  • CPA is not required, but strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 6+ years of experience in accounting related field required, with preference to years of experience in accounting for commercial activities in a downstream energy environment.

  • 2+ years of experience in inventory accounting desired.

  • 2+ years of experience managing or supervising professional staff preferred. Strong evidence of leading staff in projects or initiatives also to be considered.

  • Experience with RightAngle's ETRM application strongly desired.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley, and internal controls required.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills required.

  • Exceptional Excel spreadsheet skills required.

  • Experience with Oracle Financials desired.

  • Ability to handle complex tasks that require independent thought and analysis.

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing projects.

  • Demonstrated competency of leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate, cross-train and develop staff as a team leader.

  • Passion for continuous improvement is required, with a strong curiosity of understanding and improving end to end legacy structures and processes.

  • Fluent in English, oral and written required.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Day-to-day management of the accounting functions associated with the commercial activities within his/her area of responsibility associated with the Company's refining and marketing business. This includes all aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes, reconciliations and basic reporting functions associated with general ledger management, external and internal audit management.

  • Develop and maintain a strong, positive relationship with the front office, middle office, and other cross functional operational groups to meet objectives.

  • Integral in the timely identification of technical matters within areas of responsibility and communication of such matters to his/her Assistant Controller or peers, engagement of internal technical accounting resources, if needed, and implementation of any resulting process, system or documentation changes required.

  • Lead his/her areas of responsibility through cross-functional efforts, including special projects, recurring analysis and reporting, and budgeting and forecasting, in support of organizational objectives.

  • Direct and monitor all third-party relationships applicable to areas of responsibility.

  • Integral in the preparation and/or review of monthly and quarterly analytics of financial statements for the commercial activities associated with the Company's refining and marketing business within his/her area of responsibility in support of other accounting and finance groups' deliverables.

  • Responsible for the timely and accurate completion and delivery of key operational and financial reporting for areas of responsibility to internal stakeholders. Manage the development of schedules and related support for external reporting needs.

  • Manage the audit and review procedures for areas of responsibility and provide information as needed to independent auditors and internal auditors.

  • Ensure compliance and adherence to controls for SOX 404, including being a significant control and process owner. Ensure that individuals in the business are developed and understand their responsibilities under SOX 404.

  • Assist in the identification, evaluation, and prioritization of current business and system process optimizations associated with the refining, marketing, and logistics operations. Propose potential solutions to leadership.

  • Responsible for the oversight and development of the accounting staff within his/her area of responsibility, fostering a professional work environment that fosters respect, teamwork, and customer service amongst all stakeholders.

  • Ensure compliance and assist the corporate tax department with all taxing and regulatory bodies as they apply to areas within his/her area of responsibility.

  • Assist his/her Assistant Controller or the Chief Accounting Officer with special projects, as needed.

  • Regularly communicate with his/her Assistant Controller on work progress, concerns and questions.
