Job Summary: The Manager-Patient Care Inpatient and Observations (Inpt/Obs) works collaboratively with department nursing leadership team to provide administrative, human resource and financial management for designated area(s) of responsibility.

Functions in a Magnet Recognized large tertiary academic medical center with multiple hospitals and ambulatory sites licensed under Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), level one trauma designation, ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) receiving center designation, Comprehensive Stroke Center and Chest Pain Center accreditation. Directs day-to-day operations based on the needs of the patient population served, established professional practice model (Duffy Quality-Caring Model), applicable regulatory standards and requirements, and approved clinical practice standards, policies and procedures. Ensures quantity and quality of staff as applicable to department hours of operation.

Exhibits mission-focused thinking and participates in the nursing strategic planning process and aligns service goals and objectives with the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Ensures areas of responsibility comply with requirements of planning, regulatory, inspecting agencies, and hospital/department policies. Mentors and coaches charge nurses and staff in transforming culture, processes and clinical practice that meets the demands of cutting-edge health care delivery and nursing excellence.

Supports and inspires professional governance groups to attain required nursing excellence standards to maintain Magnet Recognition as outlined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Provides leadership in the conversion of care to evidenced-based practice at the bedside with emphasis on safety initiatives, quality care, and best practices supported by innovative technology. Participates in on-call rotation for designated area(s) based on business need. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required, or, Associate's Degree in Nursing and a Bachelor's Degree in healthcare related field and a Master's Degree in Nursing required. Minimum three years nursing experience which has provided opportunity to demonstrate competencies in clinical nursing, leadership or education required.

Knowledge and Skills: Substantial knowledge of state and federal healthcare regulations and accreditation, finance, performance improvement, quality, patient safety, evidenced-based clinical practice standards, medical staff structure, legal aspects of care, and nursing scope of practice required.

Demonstrates professional competency and ability to develop and champion department-specific clinical outcome improvements in a multi-initiative organization. Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of staff. Knowledge and application of adult learning principles, management techniques, and utilizes problem-solving methodologies in a proactive and creative manner.

Able to read; write and speak with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position (Word, Excel, Power Point); operate/troubleshoot basic office equipment required for the position. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; provide leadership; be assertive and consistent in enforcing policies ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, rules and laws; think critically; use sound judgment based on factual information and clinical knowledge; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple assignments; compose written material; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors as necessary; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone, and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to the position.

Licensures and Certifications: Active California Registered Nurse Licensure required.

Basic Life Support Certification issued by the American Heart Association required. Other certifications as required in the department-specific Plan for Providing Care.
