Position Summary

The Manager of Garden Outreach and Education manages the Garden Education Programs, Garden public outreach activities, and Garden campus outreach to promote use of the Garden and Herbarium by the campus community for teaching and research. For the Garden Education Programs, incumbent is to oversee K-12 programs, curriculum-based field trips and manage the garden docent program, including recruitment and training of Garden Educators; annually assess the performance of the school-docent program and evaluate the success of individual docents; and deliver training courses for new K-12 garden educations.

The manager will also hire, supervise and train part-time employees, work study students, and volunteer educators to support the K-12 school training programs. The incumbent will administer garden outreach activities, including, garden interpretation activities, and public tours.

The incumbent will develop training programs, train garden educators for school visits, and also recruit and coordinate garden guides who will lead public tours. As part of the garden education activities, the incumbent will help develop interpretive signage and self-guided tours and oversee a public lecture series. As campus outreach to promote use of Garden teaching and research for faculty, the incumbent will work with Garden Director to reach out to all campus users of garden, provide administrative support meetings of the Campus Advisory Group and Faculty Affiliates, and coordinate communications and activities with other campus groups as needed.

This position will allow a flexwork schedule allowing 1-2 days of remote work each week depending on the activities. The schedule will normally be Monday through Friday, with a minimum of M, W, F being on-site. The incumbent will need to work some evenings and 1-2 weekend days per month, with the expectation that compensation days for weekend work will be on Tuesday or Thursdays with discussion with Director.

Incumbent is to manage one's own budget for K-12 Education and Outreach programs. In addition, incumbent is to prepare and submit proposals to secure additional support for these programs, working with the Garden Director. Incumbent will report directly to the Garden Director and join the leadership team comprised of the Garden Director, the Assistant Garden Director, and the Herbarium Curator.

Qualifications

Knowledge of or strong interest in learning about botany, horticulture, and plants and enthusiasm for sharing this interest with diverse garden users. (Required) Excellent communication skills in conversation and through written correspondence. (Required) Proficiency in writing, editing and proofreading varying types of English text, including business correspondence, social media posts and promotional material. (Required) Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with faculty, staff, students, colleagues from other botanical gardens and the public in a complex environment. (Required) Working knowledge of computer software applications (such as MS Excel, word processing, email, internet, databases, etc.) and ability to easily learn other computer programs as needed. (Required) Ability to manage, organize, plan and follow through on projects under minimal supervision and fluctuating workloads in order to set priorities and meet deadlines. (Required) Ability to act as a point person and public face of the garden during events and to take responsibility for the safe and appropriate use of the Garden during those events. (Required) Experience teaching, chaperoning or working with K-12 students. (Preferred) Experience organizing events. (Preferred) Experience with digital design for use in production of promotional materials. (Preferred) Experience with website design and maintenance using WordPress. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Associate's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required) Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Preferred)
