Position Summary:
The Coordinator for Nature Education Development is responsible for curriculum development and the delivery of school-related and public programs. This role focuses on engaging teachers, children, and scout groups, ensuring that our nature education programs are effective and aligned with educational standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Delivery:
Teach nature programs for school field trips, homeschoolers, Girl Scout programs, and guests of varying age groups.
Deliver outreach programs to diverse audiences.
Curriculum and Program Development:
Develop, write, and assist with grant writing for new programs.
Ensure programs align with current classroom standards and public educational standards.
Create new activities for the Children's Discovery Room and Children's Activity Days event.
Assist with the development and implementation of family-friendly exhibits.
Materials and Equipment Management:
Manage and maintain teaching materials and equipment.
Volunteer Coordination:
Train and supervise volunteers who deliver non-animal programs.
Serve as Program Manager for volunteer-delivered programs.
Collaboration:
Work with the Wildlife Department to develop programs involving animals.
Coordinate with the Coordinator for Education Programs on scheduling and outreach.
Assist other departments as needed to advance Brookgreen Gardens' mission.
Event and Exhibit Coordination:
Assist with the development of public programs and events supporting Brookgreen Gardens' educational mission.
Serve as Director for Camp Brookgreen, ensuring programs meet educational standards.
Animal Program Management:
Oversee the departmental animal program collection.
Experience Required
Minimum Qualifications: • Undergraduate degree in any science discipline. • Experience in teaching with reptiles, especially snakes. • Experience as a naturalist or in a natural history museum. • Experience in writing nature programs coordinated with state standards (examples required). • Elementary school classroom experience is a bonus. • Ability to present educational content effectively to adults and children. • Strong public speaking skills. • Ability to work comfortably with volunteers, peers, and subordinates. • Commitment to excellence in work products and relationships. • High moral and ethical principles.
