The Manager of Laboratory is responsible for the delivery of laboratory services for Aspirus Wausau Hospital and the Aspirus Reference Laboratory (ARL). This position plans and manages laboratory operations in regard to services, quality, positive patient outcomes and cost efficiency and will be accountable for staff and operations in the areas of Phlebotomy, Specimen Processing, Phone Customer Service and Reception.
Uses critical thinking clinical situations and laboratory processes to achieve the best decision and desired outcomes
Provides in-services or educational training to other hospital employees in conjunction and cooperation with the Educational Services department as necessary
Maintains a current knowledge base in area(s) of specialty, and performs limited testing/tasks as needed
Continually assesses and improves systems and procedures such that the operational components of the department are optimized
Plans and implements progressive, state of the art practice standards and methods to meet the vision of the department
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide laboratory services appropriate to the age of the patient including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients
Collaborates with the Medical Director, administrative Director, Technical Specialists and bench technologists/technicians in research and development of new technology and methods to maintain state of the art, cost effective products, and test menu
Coordinate the implementation of new and modified test procedures
Possesses an in-depth knowledge of the equipment, methodology and applications of testing in their specialty section
Manages multiple priorities in high variable conditions
Functions as a resource and subject matter expert in area(s) of accountability to the entire Aspirus System
Facilitates Lab Functional Team sub-specialty committee meetings
Assists the System Director to identify, develop, and implement initiatives to support the Aspirus system and operational integration goals and initiatives
Assists the System Director to identify, evaluate, standardize, and recommend changes in processes, policies and procedures, equipment and supplies within the function, to ensure consistency and continuity in quality, service and efficiency across the System
Completes lab activities in job fairs, career days and health fairs
Knowledge of laboratory standards and practices normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related science, or equivalent
A Master's Degree and/or specialty certification, e.g., SBB, SH, etc. beneficial
Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Medical Technologist under a qualified Medical Director
Previous experience in supervision of personnel
Possess active Medical Technology/Medical Lab Technology (MT/MLT)-ASCP or CLS/NCA certification
Possesses strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including ability to coach, enroll, counsel and mentor
Aspirus Wausau Hospital is a private/not-for-profit facility. We are a Level II Trauma Center licensed for 325 beds, operating at 230. We average 12,714 inpatient admissions with 78,119 outpatients and 30,574 emergency room visits per year. Our departments include an 18-bed Medical/Surgical ICU, 8-bed cardiac ICU, 18-bed ER, 1,308 annual deliveries in our OB unit, 12-room NICU, 5 cath labs, performing 435 open heart surgeries per year in our Aspirus Heart & Vascular Institute.
Other units/departments include, Aspirus Regional Cancer Center, Aspirus Spine & Neurosciences Institute, Day Surgery, GI Center, Ortho/Neuro, Medical/Pediatrics, RT, and Rehab.
Wausau is located in the lovely Wisconsin River valley at the center of the state. We have a metro area population of 80,000 with excellent schools, busy performing arts center, large private music conservatory, and visual arts center. Quiet residential neighborhoods surround Lake Wausau and overlook the Wisconsin River or have views of Rib Mountain State Park. We enjoy four seasons of recreation including all water sports, sailing, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, soccer, down-hill and cross-country skiing. We are conveniently located three hours from Milwaukee and Minneapolis.
