Position Summary

The Manager of the First Year Experience (FYE) programming implements and designs programs to promote the holistic success and retention of first-year students. The manager provides vision, strategic direction, and accountability for developing programs and services that support academic transitions and success at Green River College.

The manager will oversee FYE programming and services that empower students to succeed academically, emotionally, and personally. FYE student milestones and the Peer Mentoring program (including hiring/training/development) are the responsibility of the manager.

Cross-campus collaboration and support is critical to the work of the FYE manager. The manager will be responsible for creating and maintaining bridges between Instruction and Student Services through exceptional collaboration, organization and communication skills. The manager is responsible for leading FYE programing and collaborating with the FYE Faculty Coordinator.

This position reports to the Dean of College and Career Pathways. The manager will also provide quarterly and annual reports on programming and student success metrics for the Guided Pathways team. This position aligns with these strategic plan goals: Success for All Students, Excellence in Teaching and Learning and Responsive Educational Programs and Student Services.

This is a temporary (2 year), 12-month position subject to grant funding, works both in-person and virtual hours serving students at all GRC campuses. The manager will work proactively with Instructional and student support service areas, Student Affairs, and Branch Campuses.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE:

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

Position Responsibilities

First Year Experience Seminar Coordination:

  • Meet weekly with FYE Faculty Coordinator to ensure alignment of faculty and Peer Mentor training materials, learning objectives, Canvas materials, and classroom expectations.

  • Work collaboratively to provide input for FYE Faculty Coordinator during review, evaluation, and refining of curriculum and modes of Peer Mentor interactions with students. FYE Faculty Coordinator is responsible for maintenance of curriculum and faculty training.

  • Work with Instructional stakeholders to coordinate annual schedule of class sections, including instructor pairing and mentor assignments.

  • Obtain pre- and post-assessment from students in course sections, faculty and Peer Mentors centered on program materials, methods and student self-efficacy.

Peer Mentor Program Direction:

  • Oversee recruitment, hiring and training and supervision of FYE Peer Mentors.

  • Maintain and submit all needed hiring and training documents for Peer Mentors.

  • Prepare quarterly and annual reports on Peer Mentor training and experiences.

  • Maintain and guide campus wide Peer Mentoring Community of Practice.

  • Attend FYE Conference annually or review National Resource Center best practices to stay current on mentoring best practices.

  • Actively participate with quarterly SBCTC FYE Consortium.

First Year Experience Milestones:

  • Coordinate programs that support the first-year student experience with a focus on highly minoritized and first-generation college students.

  • Run campus-wide FYE-related programming to help meet planned student milestones including career pathway planning.

  • Maintain and update materials in FYE Canvas shell quarterly in coordination with Student Service and Instructional areas.

Program Development and Leadership:

  • Collaborate with the faculty, staff, and administration to build institutional awareness, support program assessment efforts, and provide consultation for campus partners regarding central issues affecting undergraduate student success, including retention and persistence of first-year students.

  • Survey students and instructors on their first-year experiences. Utilize the survey results to revise the program. Develop recommendations on underrepresented and first-generation student needs and opportunities to advance their academic, campus-wide, and personal successes.

  • Oversee budget expenditures and the establishment of systems, collection of data, and maintenance of records necessary for budget audit trails, project evaluation, and reporting requirements.

  • Work with Strategic Enrollment Management stakeholders to track student progression and persistence through first year programming.

  • Represent GRC on the statewide FYE leaders' group.

  • Manage and market (as necessary) FYE resource compendium.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working with first-year or new student programs.

  • Experience in providing direct service to college students or Adult Learners.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication, team building and collaboration skills.

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with various department representatives and the community to support student success programming.

  • Demonstrated desire and ability to work with and relate to students.

  • Knowledge of current first-year student research and practices or strong understanding of student development theory and application in higher ed.

  • Ability to articulate and enact a vision of a campus that values the flourishing of all community members and strives to create a culture of well-being and holistic student success.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks with frequent interruptions to meet deadlines and appropriately handle confidential information and sensitive situations.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, prioritize workflow, work well with minimum supervision, and accept responsibility for total task completion is required.

  • Bachelor's degree in an Academic discipline or related field or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with student career and personal assessments including Clifton Strengths and Strong Interest Inventory (SII).

  • Clear understanding and appreciation of student training and educational opportunities, services, and resources available at Green River College.

  • Experience working with highly minoritized populations with demonstrated commitment to enhancing equitable experiences and academic success of college students.

  • Workshop teaching or Instructional experience preferably in a college setting

  • Demonstrated experience with campus wide collaboration on student success initiatives.

  • Experience partnering with government, business, and community organizations to advance common goals of the college.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office, the Internet, and electronic databases

  • Ability to speak another language other than English (preferably in one of the top languages spoken in the Kent, Auburn community: Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, Somali.

  • Master's degree in an Academic discipline or related field or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
