Recruitment Range: $34,936 - $49,477

(This is a range.  Selected candidate's salary will be determined within this range

based on qualifications, equity, and funding at the time of hire.)

Primary Purpose of Position: 

The Manager of Education manages the administrative duties associated with education at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville, including statistical data & analysis, scheduling, invoicing, and communications.

This position partners with the Coordinator of Education in the development, implementation, and coordination of natural science educational programming for the museum, serving Pre-K through adult audiences, which includes public events targeted to all ages.

This position may occasionally supervise contract educators, part-time educators, interns, education volunteers, and AmeriCorps volunteers.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Developing, scheduling, implementing, and evaluating written curriculum-based programs for public and school groups, primarily serving a 60 to 100-mile radius of Columbus County.

• Collecting and collating statistics for all museum educational programs and activities, including program numbers, revenue generated, and hours invested, ensuring that information has been logged before end of month.

• Working with the Whiteville Education team to create and support Museum-wide programs, events, initiatives and/or special projects.

• Managing invoices for all group programs and maintaining the education chart of accounts.

• Managing, ordering, and stocking program supplies as needed.

• Provide respite coverage in the absence of the Head of the Whiteville Branch.

Position/Physical Requirements:

• Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• Must have, or be able to obtain, and maintain a valid NC driver's license to drive a state vehicle.

Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of museum or related work

Section/Unit Description: 

The Regional Network section reaches underserved North Carolina communities and provides science education and natural history content across the state. The Regional Network is comprised of four branch facilities and the NC Science Museums Grant Program.

These facilities include the Prairie Ridge Ecostation in Raleigh, as well as branches in Greenville, Grifton, and Whiteville, N.C. The NC Science Museums Grant Program provides annual operational funding, professional development, and exhibit support to over 50 nonprofit and local government science museums throughout North Carolina. The section champion's the Museum's mission and advances operational plans. It provides cross-sectional collaboration to support the network across the State and contribute to total quality management.

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville brings high quality science and nature programming to the communities of Southeastern North Carolina. Through the Museum's building and exhibits, outdoor learning and exploration spaces, and educational and public programming, the Whiteville Branch helps to expand the reach of NCMNS's mission and vision across the state.

Division Description: 

The State's Museum devoted to science and nature, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in central Raleigh is the largest institution of its kind in the Southeastern United States and, with over a million visitors a year, the state's most visited museum. Its 300,000 square foot downtown campus is augmented by Prairie Ridge Ecostation and satellite facilities in Whiteville, Greenville, and Contentnea Creek. Together, they provide a variety of curriculum-focused classes onsite, offsite, outdoors, and online for pre-kindergarten through graduate students across the state.

As a museum of nature, we integrate the dual concepts of illumination and inspiration with the work we do and the many stories we tell. In a time of unprecedented environmental challenges, nothing could be more critical.
