The School of Graduate Studies at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Senior Staff Assistant / Manager of Career and Professional Development.

The Manager of Career and Professional Development provides personalized and general career services to biomedical PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. These services include career coaching and counseling, professional developments workshops, internships, networking events, and employer outreach. The Manager will also design and implement methods to track career outcomes of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Overall, the role of Manager of Career and Professional Development will be critical in supporting trainees to hone the necessary skills to succeed in their desired career paths and secure job placement.

Position Activities

  • Provide meaningful one-on-one career coaching and advising, for both PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for an array of career sectors (including academia, industry, government, foundations, etc.

  • Provide guidance and support to trainees both before job interviews (preparation of resumes, CVs, cover letters, and job applications) and after job interviews (evaluating finances, negotiating the offer, etc.)

  • Plan and deliver professional development workshops, networking events, and panels featuring speakers (including alumni) representing a wide variety of career options.

  • Develop and maintain career resources such as career guides, job postings, webpages, and alumni databases.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with employers to identify job opportunities and internships/externships for trainees.

  • Design and implement methods to track career outcomes of biomedical PhD students and postdoctoral trainees.

  • Work with faculty members to integrate career development activities into existing academic programs.

  • Arrange co-sponsorship of the New York City-based PhD career advising symposium "What Can You Be with a PhD?" and similar exposure opportunities to introduce Downstate graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to a variety of career paths.

  • Conduct assessments to measure the effectiveness of career and professional development service provided.

  • Work collaboratively with key leadership stakeholder, including (but not limited to) the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Directors of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, SVP for Research, and/or their designees.

  • Collaborate with other departments and programs within SUNY Downstate to promote career and professional development opportunities for trainees.

  • Oversee date collection and analyses on graduated student outcomes.

  • Maintain updated alumni contact information.

  • Develop and deliver workshops and online resource repositories for extramural fellowship application training (e.g., NIH F30 and F31).

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of career services practices, trends, and issues in higher education.

  • Understanding of the unique needs and challenges faced by biomedical PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships with employers and trainees.

  • Familiarity with career and professional development resources and tools such as career assessments, job search platforms, and social media

  • Strong organizational and project management skills to manage multiple programs and events simultaneously.

  • Advanced working knowledge of computational packages and cloud-based resources for word processing, spreadsheets, project management, data analysis and visualization, and presentation development.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to promote career and professional development opportunities for trainees.

  • Experience/knowledge of career options and hurdles for international students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a related field such as career counseling, higher education administration, or a scientific field.
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday; 9:00am to 5:00pm (Full-Time)

SL3

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
