Organizational Overview
Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking a highly-skilled strategic leader for the Applications and Software Engineering department within the Information Technology Division (ITD) who is comfortable adapting to a dynamic environment with a track record of implementing technical and organizational change through careful analysis and collaboration with senior leadership.
Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and ITD division manager, the Manager, ITD Software Engineering, oversees an enterprise software management and development team, a portfolio of local and cloud-based enterprise applications, database platforms, and related integrations. They own and drive application strategy and execution, overseeing projects through completion. They work in close collaboration with business partners and application stakeholders while partnering with ITD leaders and managers.
Brookhaven Lab's Information Technology Division's (ITD) mission is to deliver safe, efficient operations that ensure the delivery of the Lab's research mission by:
Developing and deploying state-of-the-art information and computing systems in support of scientific research and business operations
Providing a reliable and secure, high-speed network infrastructure for scientific and business computing
Developing a scientific computing infrastructure that can support the computing needs that are common among the scientific departments
Providing support to scientific and administrative programs to help them address their unique computing problems
Providing a cost-effective, highly reliable, secure, and standardized computing infrastructure
Promoting best practices in the areas of platform support, application development, and customer service
Providing cost-effective information services to the Brookhaven Lab community including Research Library, publications, records management, and technical editing services, in support of the research mission and in compliance with contractual requirements
ITD includes experts in information technology (IT) infrastructure and operations, cyber security, business systems, data information, and information services, including records management and the Research Library. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who is resourceful and innovative, and who understands that collaboration with stakeholders from across the Laboratory is critical to ensuring the right expertise and technology are in place to advance our mission of bringing science solutions to the world.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership and direction while managing a department of supervisors, software developers, and software architects, including evaluating employee performance, setting department and individual expectations and goals, creating an inclusive environment, and focusing on development and teamwork
Build strong working relationships with laboratory leaders, jointly identifying strategic needs through shared business roadmap development and objective prioritization across resources
Act as an organizational change agent while advocating for business transformation through technology and operational excellence
Maintain a continuous learning mindset, bringing modern thinking, practices, and research in technology management and solutions into the role
Continually improve work procedures and processes for the department
Addresses unusual and non-recurring problems by devising approaches to assess the situation, developing options, and introducing new procedures or tools as necessary
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or equivalent experience
Twelve (12) + years of relevant experience with at least 5 years of leading a small to medium sized group dedicated to software development
Experience leading, developing, and supporting a team of software development professionals
Experience leading the management of cloud-based enterprise business and productivity systems
Develop staff capability to meet future needs by building new competencies, maintaining an appropriately trained and motivated staff, and supporting their long-term professional development
Ability to manage stakeholder and partner relationships, including experience consulting with internal departments to identify customer and strategic needs, integrating them into application roadmaps and project objectives
Experience developing and communicating strategic direction, both functional and technical
Application portfolio management experience, including the drive to understand and reduce technical complexity, increase platform standardization, and streamline the portfolio
Experience with organizational change management methods and practices
Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion in overall project management by prioritizing, planning, and tracking project progress
Demonstrated ability to prepare effective presentations for specific audiences
Ability to keep current of emerging technologies, best practices, and lessons learned while communicating to management, staff, and users
Skill in problem solving and decision making, with the ability to work effectively independently or as a team member within collaborative workspaces
Professional presence and proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with all levels of an organization
Conscientious budget manager and steward of resources
Some travel is required
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
Master's degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering, computer engineering, or other information system disciplines
Knowledge of business architecture concepts and practices
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in a matrixed and hybrid work environment
Leading, creating or working in a DevOps or DevSecOps environment
