The Infection Preventionist is trained in hospital epidemiology principles and is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of hospital-acquired infections (HAI); educating employees about infection prevention; and the development of health system policies and procedures to insure rigorous infection control standards that meet Joint Commission, OSHA, Centers for Medicaid/Medicare Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other nationally organized agencies recommendations and requirements.
Diploma in Nursing and/or Associates Degree in Nursing required, BSN preferred.
Current Certification (CIC) by the Certification Board for Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBC) is preferred.
If a candidate does not have current CIC Certification then attendance at APIC courses
"Epi 101" and "Epi 201" are required within two years of entering the position.
Certification (CIC) by the Certification Board for Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) is required within two years of entering the position.
Must have clinical knowledge of infectious disease processes across varied patient populations; the Ability to interpret microbiology sensitivity and resistance patterns (microbiology reports) is essential. Knowledge of disease transmission, & medical terminology relating to disease transmission, diagnosis, and treatment.
Experience and willingness to employ statistics and Microsoft Office including Excel, developing excel spreadsheets, etc. Must be proficient in entering data into multiple data systems. Must understand the importance of meeting regulatory timelines.
Must understand the importance of and maintain the confidentiality of patient and facility information. Exhibit an attitude, which promotes harmony and goodwill among patients, caregivers, and co-workers. Must communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing in a timely manner.
Must be able to listen effectively to patients, caregivers, co-workers, and supervisors. Candidate must be willing to complete APIC EPI courses and obtain certification in Infection Prevention and Control. 2-3 years of acute care experience required. Attendance at APIC courses "EPI 101" and "EPI 201" is required within two years of entering the position. CIC by the Certification Board for Infection Control and Epidemiology is required within three years of entering the position.
