I. Job Summary

WM is looking for a candidate with strong leadership abilities who wants to grow their career in operations management. This training program gives you the knowledge and skills necessary to start a successful career at WM as a Route Manager.

Location is flexible within Ohio during training. You will travel to our Operation locations throughout Ohio, with possible travel to Michigan and Indiana, to train under our best District Managers and learn first hand how to become a highly effective Route Manager. Once you become a Route Manager, in most cases, travel will be minimal.

Operations Management Trainee (OMT) is a position part of a required developmental training program for a duration of 6 to 8 months designed to prepare the candidate for our Route Manager position. The duties and responsibilities are under the direction and supervision of WM frontline managers (e.g., Fleet, Sales, District or Route Managers) related to the assigned business activity. This position, through assigned work activities and projects, will develop a working knowledge of the WM day-to-day hauling or post-collection business operations including but not limited to route auditing, analysis and improvement recommendations, safety rules and practices and the function and role of intra-company departments as it pertains to day to day business and long term goals (HR, Finance/Accounting, Customer Service). The OMT training program is designed to develop individuals into frontline manager roles.

II. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Hauling Operations: Responsible for the knowledge development and progressive understanding and expertise in route planning, auditing, analysis and improvement and related logistics systems

  • Responsible for learning DOT & OSHA safety programs and systems; operational business processes, systems & tools; performance management; dispatch & routing; fleet maintenance processes

  • Partners with drivers on existing routes to develop job related skills

  • Collaborates with all frontline managers to learn the day-to-day business operations (i.e. Operations Improvement Manager, Fleet Manager, Sales Manager, District Managers, Route Managers)

  • Works with local safety teams to continue to create a safety conscious culture

  • Completes the assigned OMT training curriculum and all other assigned trainings

  • Participate in area mentor programs

  • Develop working knowledge of day-to-day hauling operations and account for variances while promoting Waste Management Operating Standards

  • Perform other duties as assigned; may include special projects

IV. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited), or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four (4) years of relevant work experience.

  • Education Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Business, Transportation, Operations Management, Logistics or related field of study.

  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory/leadership experience

  • Experience Preferred: Experience managing CDL drivers requiring strong coaching skills

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License and a clean driving record

  • Must be able to maintain a valid driver's license and clean driving record throughout the duration of employment in this position

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Must be willing to relocate within an assigned geographic area at the conclusion of the training program

  • Must be proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of programs, specifically MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint applications

  • Must be willing to work flexible start times

  • Must be able to ride in vehicle for up to 12 hours or sit at a desk for up to 12 hours per day

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Must have exceptional time management and organizational skills

V. Work Environment

While some of the OMT work is performed within an office atmosphere, frequent field assignments are the core foundation of the position. When conducting field assignments one should posses the ability to ascend into and descend from commercial vehicles (typically steps are 18 inches in height) and ride in commercial vehicles for over 12 consecutive hours, where you will be exposed to climatic weather as depicted by the geographical region for which you reside or are assigned. For example, OMTs located in the southern most areas of our company will be working in extreme heat with high probability of rain during the summer months and mild fall like conditions throughout the winter months.

This program requires the successful candidate to have the ability to relocate across several regions of the U.S, and will require extensive travel (both air and car). An OMT will also be required to work non-traditional work schedules i.e. 12 14 hour workdays, some weekends, some early start times etc. While some of the OMT work is done in an office, frequently he/she will work out in the field, exposed to elements, weather and other non-office type conditions.

Provides input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions. * Formulates both short-term and long-term goals and action plans in conjunction with the Market Area General Manager and/or Director of Operations. * Participates in regular P&L reviews to ensure that budgets are met; develops and implements programs for optimal equipment utilization, equipment maintenance, and labor and material costs. * Interacts with local city, municipal, and county agencies to ensure customer satisfaction, improve efficiency, renew contracts and negotiate new contracts; establishes WM as a good corporate citizen and valued resource. * Engages suppliers in problem solving and participates in suppliers' improvement processes by providing performance feedback on supplier surveys. * Minimizes the total number of suppliers used by working with Supplier Partners to eliminate/reduce the number of one-time suppliers. * Works with functional groups to resolve employee relations and labor relations issues.
