Manager, Fish Hatchery

Salary - $45,000 - $50,000

  • Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Dean of the School of Natural Resources and the Program Manager for Fish Management and Aquaculture Sciences, serve as Chief culturist at an educational fish hatchery.Works closely with the instructors within the Fish Management and Aquaculture Sciences curriculum to provide a hands-on real world educational experience; Assist in developing employment and internship opportunities for students; Participates in student recruitment; Engages in professional development; and Participates in Institutional / School activities.

  • Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as a chief culturist and manager of a hatchery tapered towards educational need and production levels set by the Dean of NR and the PM for FMAQ.

  • Conducts all areas of warm water, cool water, cold-water, fish and invertebrate propagation, including care and maintenance of brood stock, fertilization of eggs both natural and in-vitro, hatching and care of eggs and fry, stocking of fry and fingerlings for grow-out production to market size.

  • Oversees or conducts all pond, cage (or pen), tank, and grounds, maintenance and repair including: vegetation control, minor building repair, custodial care, water control, and all minor plumbing maintenance.

  • Conducts feeding and nutritional care of the fish.

  • Keeps all fish stocks in good health and has the expertise to treat for disease when it manifests itself.

  • Oversees and conducts fish harvest, advertisement, and distribution/sales of fish.

  • Maintains and keeps hatchery records of all relevant hatchery operations and business.

  • Assists PM with capital improvements and maintenance activities for the Hatchery and related facilities.

  • Responsible for coordination of all on-site activities to ensure the operation meets budgetary and performance goals, including implementation and improvements to the operational strategy personnel policy and management, and public relations.

  • Must be willing to assist in developing and delivering programs at Hocking College (examples: assist in developing student practicums and internships; developing and delivering national and international workshops and seminars).

  • Maintains list of professional, regulatory, and operational contacts.

  • Assists Dean and FMAQ Program Manager with the compilation of data when needed.

  • Works closely with the Fish and Wildlife; and Fish Management and Aquaculture instructors to provide a hands-on real world educational experience

  • Maintains and operates the Lake Snowden Dam, schedules and documents regulatory inspections, reports potential hazards, and maintains any records relevant to the Emergency Dam Protocol.

  • Works in cooperation with the Dean and FMAQ PM to develop and maintain a webpage to serve as a point of sale, advertisement, recruitment tool, and educational resource for the public on all subjects relating to Fish Management, Research, and Aquaculture affiliated with Hocking College.

  • Maintains all equipment related to the Fish Management portion of the program such as boats, motors, nets, and chemical storage.

  • Chemical treatment of Hocking managed water bodies (including Lake Snowden) for nuisance aquatic vegetation and removal of nuisance mammals within the legality and compliance of his/her State permit.

  • Attends at least one professional meeting per year as a representative of Hocking College to say current on developing techniques and advancing higher education.

  • Supervises and directs work schedules and activities of technicians, junior culturists, student workers, and volunteers instructing personnel in the performance of duties.

  • Writes performance evaluations as assigned by the FMAQ PM.

  • Serves as Site Safety Officer and is responsible for periodic safety training and briefing.

  • Primary purchasing agent for onsite needs and must coordinate freight and shipping.

  • Supervises or directs egg-takes, marking and tagging, and production schedules according to established standards.

  • Prepares feeding and rearing schedules based on calculated growth rates, prepares feed, supervises and/or performs necessary feeding activities.

  • Teach classes related to the aforementioned skills and the Hatchery Manager's areas of expertise based on experience, credentials, and certifications, including Pond Nuisance Control, Hatchery Maintenance, Fish Culture 1

  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications - Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Aquaculture or closely related field. Will consider applicants with a B.S. and experience to match aquaculture skills.

  • One (1) year fish culture experience in the operation, care and maintenance of fish and related equipment.

  • Experience in adult education and training is desirable.

  • Requires a strong technical and field background in all aspects of fish management aquaculture.

  • Ability to lift objects 50 pounds or heavier overhead repeatedly.

  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather.

  • Good communication, inter-personal, and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated sustained ability to work as a team member.

  • Willingness to participate in Natural Resources recruiting initiatives.

  • Willingness to assist in developing promotional materials to be used in Natural resources recruiting initiatives.

  • Maintains safe working area and conditions.

  • Serves as positive role model for students, co-workers, and outside agencies.

  • Must have experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.
