This is a position within the Accounting Center of Excellence (ACOE) and provides technical accounting leadership, analysis and support on the appropriate application of U.S. GAAP and SSAP. This position is also responsible for the management and implementation of various ACOE and Finance initiatives. This role supports GAAP and statutory reporting by overseeing the product accounting close process on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis. The ideal candidate has a strong accounting background, is able to work independently and collaboratively with subject matter experts to research business issues and provide quality financial analysis. This position monitors U.S. GAAP and statutory accounting standards issued by the FASB and the NAIC to ensure compliance. This position also partners with business area CFOs, Segment Leads, Financial Reporting and FP&A to provide financial analyses for product reporting, planning and the business decision making process.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Direct the team on accurate completion of all reporting, analysis, and manages the day to day activities of the team including the GAAP and statutory accounting, general ledger processes, and reporting for specified financial area
Direct maintenance of various systems and data assets that support the specific financial area(s) of responsibility
Act as consultant providing financial support to business areas regarding conformance to corporate policies and procedures, technical inquiries, planning and forecasting process, and various tax and accounting issues
Review existing accounting, financial reporting and administrative processes and procedures in an effort to streamline activities to increase productivity
Maintain compliance with corporate policies, procedures and controls and external regulatory requirements
Lead and/or participate in business initiatives and projects
Present reporting and analysis to management. Proactively identify and research unusual trends and make recommendations; Lead and/or perform analyses and forecasts
Reconcile and balance accounts related to the specific financial area(s) to maintain control and accuracy by identifying discrepancies and their cause and recommend corrective action
Maintain integrity of data in various systems and data assets that support the specific financial areas of responsibility
Analyze financial data, provide recommendations for appropriate action, and prepare related reports in consultation with business partner
Direct resources and produce results to solve problems or issues
Take ownership for the outcome of their team's work as well as their own efforts
Clearly communicate issues identified and recommend the most appropriate/effective solutions
Maintain a strong, specialized working knowledge of Unum's products, services and business processes including, his/her specific business area, the issues and technical skills required to support the area
May supervise and/or manage work of staff
May actively participate in the hiring, development, performance and compensation decisions affecting assigned staff
Bachelor's degree required
CPA and public accounting experience strongly preferred
At least five years of comparable experience
Strong understanding of the components of multiple financial statements and how they interact with one another
Experience navigating change in a positive manner
Has mastered solid customer service skills while working effectively with functional area, team and other resources to complete assigned work while broadening contacts in other functional areas
Highly motivated individual able to take independent actions to solve problems/issues with limited involvement from manager
Manages multiple projects simultaneously with minimal guidance from manager
Strong communication and negotiation skills; Adept at handling group dynamics
Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
General ledger systems and reporting tools experience preferred
Proficient in Word and PowerPoint
