Position Overview

Under the direction of the Plant Manager, the Engineering Department Manager directs the activities of Project Engineering, Building Maintenance, and Facilities. Incumbent is responsible for all Plant and Departmental goals, including reliability, cost reduction, waste reduction, safety, quality and sanitation improvements, downtime reduction, as well as ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures. In addition, this position will monitor progress towards goals and make certain that capital projects and other resources are being utilized to provide maximum benefits to the facility. Incumbent works collectively with Plant Leadership to actualize McCormick's vision and ensure objectives are met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Management: Manage day-to-day activities of Maintenance department, Project Engineering, and outside building contractors.

    Will set goals, priorities, monitor progress, and evaluate performance of staff to ensure the maximum benefit of the resources expended. Creates an empowered environment, ensuring that the Engineering & Maintenance organization and its people understand the goals and objective (OGSM's) of the business and that they have the resource and support to accomplish them. Establishes an environment that ensures and supports open and healthy communications.

  • CAAP Execution: Prepare and manage Capital Asset Acquisition Proposal (CAAP's) annual budget.

    Ensure that projects are planned properly to provide sufficient funding, review data to ensure that results are achievable, and obtain necessary approvals. Closely monitor projects to ensure they are completed as planned and that funds are utilized properly. On an ongoing basis, initiate design changes and modifications to further improve machine efficiency, to facilitate packaging design changes and cost reductions, and to expand the capability of existing equipment to handle new products.

  • Strategic Planning: Development of both strategic capital plans, ensuring an acceptable return on investment replacement of worn or obsolete equipment, expansion of capacity to meet sales growth, equipment modification or replacement related to packaging changes or cost reduction, as well as development of expanded productive capacity for new products. Coordinate the selection, design, and layout of processing and packaging machinery to ensure efficiency, optimum space utilization, and adequate production capacity.

  • Process & Program Standardization: Responsible for ensuring that all engineering and maintenance processes are completely documented (including Capital start up plans, SOPs, DOPs, and run documents), and implement any changes to these processes. Accountable for the development and implementation of effective preventive maintenance programs, along with the establishment of a proficient maintenance stores procurement and inventory control system, as applicable.

  • Risk Management: Responsible for meeting all regulatory requirements pertaining to the areas of waste disposal, air emissions, and facilities permits and codes.

    Responsible for timely filing of all regulatory documents to the appropriate Federal, State, and Local Governmental agencies. Ensure that safety and security measures are in place for the facility. This includes maintenance of sprinkler system meeting fire code and insurance carrier requirements, installation of fire-fighting equipment, and maintenance of an internal alarm and evacuation system.

    Responsible for meeting all regulatory requirements pertaining to waste disposal, emissions, facility permits and codes. Also, responsible for filing with the appropriate Federal, State, and Local Gov't agencies.

  • Budget Management: Creates operating budgets and capital budgets with other leadership teams members.

    Manage department expense budgets with appropriate accounting information and support. Participates in the business planning and budgeting process. Develops short and long-term cost containment/reduction strategies. Manages operating budget for Engineering, Facilities, and maintenance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Relevant Engineering degree (ME, CHemE, IE, EE)

  • Experience - functional/industry/commercial knowledge, business acumen

  • Minimum 8-10 years manufacturing experience in food processing, pharmaceutical, or chemical process plus progressive leadership experience, including prior leadership of a large technical team. Shop floor/information systems experience; i.e.

    PC, PLC, Robotics. Process engineering/Analytica process mapping experience. Knowledge of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) and P.M. (preventative maintenance) practices.

    Experience in Food Processing an asset. The job requires a detailed understanding of how all areas of the plant interact to contribute to the business. Requires a general understanding of the industry. Requires basic commercial awareness as it relates to competition but only requires limited understanding of the latest developments in the industry.

  • Interpersonal Skills - leadership, interactions, communication, influence

  • Strong communication and diplomacy skills are required to guide and influence others. Leadership of exempt staff to achieve common objectives.

    May interface with external parties as representative of the plant/facility. Strong cross-functional strategic leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. Ability to translate strategy into actionable information in small or large groups in a clear, concise, and professional manner.

    Ability to influence upwards. This role has contact with suppliers, vendors, and key customers for assigned areas. Strong relationships with HQ Engineering, Marketing, Packaging Development, Plants. Provides mentoring, coaching and leading technology and technical skills development.

  • Leadership: This job has full management responsibility for a sizeable team, including managers and professionals, including management of people, defining roles and responsibilities, planning for the department's future needs and operations, counselling employees on performance and contributing to employee pay decisions/changes.

Manage an average of $5-10MM of capital annually. Manages the operation through the direct supervision of Department Managers, Engineering professionals, and indirectly through Team Managers and Technicians.

    Directly impacts the work and performance of all production/operations teams across multiples lines of business. Performance has a large impact in terms of the size of the operation (people, revenue, budget) and the influence/impact on the plant, division, and company.
