Positions in this function produce innovative solutions driven by exploratory data analysis from unstructured, diverse datasets typically measured in gigabytes or larger. Applies knowledge of statistics, machine learning, programming, data modeling, simulation, and advanced mathematics to recognize patterns, identify opportunities, pose business questions, and make valuable discoveries leading to prototype development and product improvement. Uses a flexible, analytical approach to design, develop, and evaluate predictive and prescriptive models and advanced algorithms that lead to optimal value extraction from the data. Works with analytics and statistical software such as SQL, R, Python, Hadoop and others to perform analysis and interpret data. This function is not intended for employees performing the following work: less complex analysis on small data sets; rules-based algorithmic or descriptive analytics; development of big data infrastructure.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Be an individual contributor in the Data Science team and work with team members across the globe to solve real-world problems in the Healthcare domain using cutting-edge capabilities and emerging technologies

  • Deliver advanced Data Science capabilities to businesses in a meaningful manner through successful proof-of-concept solutions, and later on smoothly transition the proof-of-concept into production. (e.g. build and demonstrate a prototype Reinforcement Learning application in the Healthcare space)

  • Leverage Optum, part of the UnitedHealth Group family of businesses, big data analytics infrastructure comprising Hadoop, R, Python, HIVE, SPARK to tackle previously unsolved problems across Risk and Quality, Fraud Waste and Abuse, Provider Operations, Provider Experience, Customer Engagement and Experience, Clinical Services etc.

  • Conduct evaluations and assessments of new tools and technologies to ensure that the team stays at the frontier of Analytics. (e.g. evaluate application of Graph Technology for detecting insurance fraud)

  • Write White Papers to evangelize ideas and drive adoption with the broader enterprise

  • Publish Research Papers in international journals and file patents for intellectual property

  • Present in leading conferences to showcase expertise and solutions

Coordinates, supervises and is accountable for the daily activities of business support, technical or production team or unit

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Engineering/Statistics/Economics/Computer Science/Mathematics (with a strong quantitative background)

  • 4 years of Individual Contributor experience in Analytics/Data Science

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in solving real-world problems using Natural Language Processing and/or Image Processing

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in using algorithm libraries / frameworks like H2O, Keras and TensorFlow

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in working with Big Data technologies like HIVE, SPARK etc.

  • Expert level programming ability in R and/or Python and possess good presentation skills with the ability to organize and present information to audiences with disparate levels of technical understanding

  • Consistent track record of building and successfully deploying advanced analytics solutions with demonstrable value to the organization

  • Excellent consulting skills, including the ability to engage with and present to CXO leaders as well as stakeholders with minimum to high analytics exposure across various departments in an organization

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, including the ability to disaggregate issues, identify root causes and recommend solutions

  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of some or most econometric/statistical methods like Linear Regression, Logistic regression, Generalized Linear Model, Survival Analysis, Sampling Techniques, Time Series Analysis, CART, CHAID, Clustering, Discriminant Analysis, Principal Component Analysis, Factor Analysis, Multidimensional Scaling etc.

  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of some or most Machine learning techniques like Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Gradient Boosting Machine, XGBoost etc.

  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of some or most Deep Learning techniques across Recurrent Neural Networks, Convolutional Neural Networks etc.

  • Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment

  • Professional, service oriented, proactive and flexible
