Manager, Consumer Products Design

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE OF POSITION

Mattel, Inc. is seeking a Manager to join the Global Consumer Products Design hardlines team, working on a variety of boys and girls properties including: Barbie, Polly Pocket, Hot Wheels, Mattel Games, as well as the extended Mattel Brands portfolio. Hardlines categories are comprised of licensed product lines within home goods, health & beauty (including Personal Care), stationery, confections and party goods with the flexibility to work on consumer electronics, sporting goods, toy, and activity categories.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Manager will be responsible for developing and communicating design strategy and working with marketing, retail/franchise, toy team and licensees. This is accomplished through the rendering and delegating the creation of one-sheetscustomized assets, concept boards and working with licensees and internal and external resources to complete 3-D preliminary models that fully express all aspects of the product concepts.

The ideal candidate has a breadth of design skills and can share their vision both visually and verbally. Must display a positive attitude and out-of-the box thinking. This position requires a self-starter with leadership potential. We support brands by creating and implementing category strategies and lead our licensees. Lead innovation projects in specific hardlines categories and work with licensees to create new solutions and encourage out of the box thinking.

Must be able to articulate ideas to push licensees to ensure our brands stand apart from competition.

Must have a strong graphic design background as well as be able to articulate concepts in 3D. This requires a proficiency in both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, which are essential tools in Global Consumer Products Design.

Must have a good understanding of color, textures and materials for the variety of products in the categories they are to manage. Strong communication and presentation skills are required to articulate design concepts to cross-functional management teams.

Responsibilities include:

  • Initiate design vision and direction with licensees per management and strategic criteria through the development of creative strategies.

  • Execute 2-D renderings, presentations and on occasion 3-D preliminary models of complete product concepts that communicate creative strategy.

  • Work with Manager and cross-functional team to create one sheets, inspiration decks, licensee on boarding decks, category specific asset collections & special projects (including pitches).

  • Reinforce and strengthen approval process including BrandComply global system.

  • Effectively participate in the early development phase of the style guide production as it applies to hard lines categories.

  • Analyze current and emerging fashion and consumer trends. Integrate into current design projects.

  • Actively participate in team brainstorm sessions (as well as cross-functional sessions) for new product development and innovation.
