The Manager of Communications and Special Projects is responsible for conceptualizing and executing communications efforts promoting the University, internally and externally, with the aim of enhancing the institution's reputation and the organization's missions and goals. The Manager, Communications and Special Projects will be responsible for developing communication materials and coordinating communications efforts and special projects for the University of Miami.

Core Job Functions
1.Coordinate communications efforts and special projects for the University of Miami.
2.Oversees website management and content development.
3.Monitors the content of all press releases and other internal and external communications.
4.Engages in special project budget development and project tracking.
5.Aids in the preparation of presentations and/or speeches.
6.Provides supervision and direction to staff and works in conjunction with the communications department.
7.Corresponds with employees and external stakeholders regarding special projects developments.
8.Creates strategies to increase employee awareness and promote productivity.
9.Acts as liaison to and maintains positive relationships with the media and other interested parties.
10. Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.

Core Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in relevant field, Master's degree preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 4 years of professional experience in journalism or communications (public relations, media relations, public affairs, marketing, etc.) including at least 1 year of relevant project management experience. Equivalent combinations of education/experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of business and management principles.

  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

Department Specific Functions

  • Manages special reports and websites that showcase research around both topical and geographic areas, such as climate change, new learning techniques and hemispheric partnerships as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Public Relations and Executive Director of Communications and Public Relations.

  • Takes the lead in writing engaging articles for website and other publications on faculty research and University initiatives with the focus on growing audience and enhancing the reputation of the University.

  • Assists in coordinating and conducting research for key communications projects as assigned by the Assistant Vice President.

  • Demonstrates expertise in the development and disciplined execution of strategic communication plans, using research and audience insight to develop key messages.

  • Assists in developing communication strategies and materials in support of overall University mission, in line with the President's message.

  • Incorporates social and digital media tools into strategic communication plans and special events programming.

  • Monitors and posts to social media outlets, as required.

  • Provides editorial support to academic and administrative units and external constituencies to ensure consistent standards in remarks, letters, press releases, and official statements.

  • Builds relationships across the institution to enhance professional image of and support for internal communications.

The Communications Specialist plans, develops, and implements internal and external communication projects and initiatives on behalf of the assigned department. The incumbent creates and identifies opportunities to promote a favorable perception of the University to internal and external audiences. An employee in this position also acts as a liaison to departments within the University and external parties to provide communication support. Core Job Functions Develops communication materials, including web information, fact sheets, letters, emails, and instant messaging for the purpose of communicating with target groups. Plans and implements targeted communication campaigns. Acts as the point of contact for project-related questions and makes recommendations to resolve problems and issues. Logs contact information and discussion topics for yield analysis. Maintains information databases, and tracks, measures, evaluates, and reports achievements of internal and external communication goals. Develops reports and distributes them to department leadership. Assists with the administration of the assigned department's communication budget. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
