Job Summary:

This position will be responsible for managing a team of casualty claims examiners possessing varied experience levels. This position will oversee the resolution of Primary and Excess casualty claims, including construction-related and products liability matters, with low to high complexity. Provide direction, coaching, and training to achieve appropriate case outcomes. The position will report to the Director or Senior Director of claims and be responsible for conveying the organization's objectives and priorities to staff and measure progress towards stated goals.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of up to 8 claim handlers

  • Direct and monitor assignments of new loss activity

  • Review and approve correspondence and reports

  • Review and approve reserves and settlements in excess of examiner's authority

  • Make recommendations concerning reserve changes to director or senior management.

  • Participate in review and discussion of large loss activity with interested stakeholders (UW, PL, Actuarial, Executive Management)

  • Ensure that team adheres to Fair Claims practices

  • Assess and evaluate individual examiner and team performance, provide feedback and develop training needs

  • Prepare and distribute reports

  • Assist in preparation of budgets, evaluation of expenses and assess resource needs

  • Foster and encourage strong relationships with internal stakeholders (UW, PL, Actuarial)

  • Promote and enhance strong relationships with customers and channel partners

  • Participate in special projects as requested

  • Travel to other claim offices, mediations, trials, and conferences as required.

  • Responsible for training and development of team members

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • JD , advanced degree, or focused technical degree a plus

Certification

  • Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license.

  • Successful achievement of industry designations (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU) or

  • I-Lead or other Management Training

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Prior management experience a plus

  • Experience working with complex coverage issues in casualty claims a plus

Skill Sets

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills proficient with handling data and reporting tools for assessment of performance, process efficiencies, and supporting stakeholders' information needs.

  • Strong organization and time management skills

  • Ability to deliver outstanding customer service

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word)

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Strong desire for continuous improvement

Responsibilities: * Investigate, negotiate and settle Property cases. * Maintain and adhere to Markel's guidelines and procedures. * Ensure proper adherence to internal large loss reporting requirements. * Promptly communicate with Claims Manager on adverse case developments and provide information on pertinent issues affecting the lines of business * Contribute and assist in the implementation of a wide range of initiatives, discussion and action plans brought forth by the Claims Manager * Communicate with underwriting as needed to manage claims and to alert of any significant developments * Participate in agent related functions and meetings as required Requirements: * 1 to 3 years of successful Property claims handling experience with a personal lines or commercial insurance company preferred * College degree and/or professional designation preferred * Sound comprehension of commercial property coverages. * Excellent written and oral communication skills. * Experience in determining contractual obligations, coverage analyses, and investigations. * Ability to manage small to moderate Property exposures, set loss and expense reserves and evaluate settlement values. * Ability to proactively self-manage an active caseload. * Ability to analyze and convey summations of pertinent coverage issues; recognize alternative approaches and develop action plans, both orally and in written form. * Travel required as necessary (less than 15%).
