The purpose of Welfare and Self-Reliance is to:

  • Support the Church's divinely appointed responsibility to care for those in need by helping Church leaders, members, and others assist with immediate relief; resources to build their spiritual and temporal self-reliance; and provide service.

  • Reports to the Director for Temporal Affairs for the Utah Area. Receives strategic and operational guidance from the Welfare and Self-Reliance Consultant.

Oversees

  • Welfare and self-reliance support for local ecclesiastical leaders in the Utah Area, including emergency preparedness and response.

  • Church humanitarian efforts in the Utah Area.

  • The selection, supervision and training of regional welfare and self-reliance managers and the area humanitarian specialist(s).

  • Bachelor's degree required (MBA or relevant master's degree preferred) in business (or non-profit management), sales, marketing, or related discipline.

  • At least ten years of professional experience, including demonstrated success working with mid- to upper-level management and with entrepreneurial start-ups, sales, marketing or other business development roles.

  • Capacity to lead effective change

  • Demonstrated abilities to train large groups of people and to develop others, including a mixed workforce.

  • An understanding of the doctrine and principles underlying the Church's efforts of caring for those in need.

  • A love for and desire to lift and serve those in need more effectively.

  • Church leadership experience including application and understanding of welfare and self-reliance principles; ability to work with priesthood and Relief Society leaders.

  • Proven competence in handling person-to-person relationships with General Authorities, priesthood leaders, DTA and other senior positions both inside and outside the Church.

  • High level of analytical and creative skills, the ability to communicate complex ideas verbally and in writing and strong personal computer skills.

Leader Orientation and Support Area Office:

  • Oversees the work of welfare and self-reliance with the DTA and Area priesthood leaders (Area Presidency, Area Seventies, Coordinating Councils).

  • Serves on the Area WSR Committee and coordinates the work of welfare and self-reliance with Area priesthood leaders (Area Presidency, Area Seventies and others).

  • Serves on the Utah Area Audit Committee.

  • Counsel with and provide timely and accurate reports to the Director for Temporal Affairs, the Area Presidency, Area Seventies.

  • Under the direction of area leadership, ensure local WEL/SRS managers assist local leaders with the orientation, tools, and resources to help members become spiritually and temporally self-reliant by making them aware of all church and community resources and how they can access them.

Resource Development:

  • Based on member need, develop, and maintain area-wide relationships with community resources (NGO's, government agencies, employers, educators, etc.

  • Maintain subject matter expertise on relevant market needs and trends, and train local staff and missionaries to do so for their respective geographies.

  • Serve as public affairs liaison for welfare, self-reliance, and humanitarian issues.
