Sirius' growing Managed Services division is seeking an experienced, customer focused Mainframe z/OS Engineer. This role can be based from most major US cities, and can be a telecommute role.

Position Summary:

The primary purpose of this position is z/OS operating system installation and customization using the IBM ServerPac for z/OS process program. This position will apply operating system and program product fixes on a regular basis, as well as analyze and debug operating system and program product related issues. This role will also install and support commonly used ISV products (i.e. CA, BMC, Rocket Software). In addition, this position will also estimate and plan for installation and upgrade activities, as well as new customer transition projects.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides technical assistance regarding Disaster Recovery (DR) exercises and Business Continuity Processes (BCP)

  • Ensures system improvements and/or modifications are implemented. Develops, enhances and/or supports technical approaches that allow successful audits and scalable implementations of large, complex mainframe environments

  • Identifies and resolves performance issues

  • Facilitates project planning efforts by establishing and meeting work estimates, target dates, milestones and schedules

  • Participates in ongoing development and improvement of installation standards

  • Updates customer incident tickets and change orders with effective communication, providing internal management and customer account managers with status information

  • Works with project managers in the development and implementation of project plans and timelines

  • Provides team members with technical training and/or mentoring as needed

  • Provides primary support for reported problems related to software in assigned area of responsibility and related products

  • Fulfills ServiceNow requests for customers as they pertain to software in assigned area of responsibility and related products

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field

  • At least five (5) years experience installing, maintaining, and supporting mainframe software products for IBM mainframes and performing system management functions (software installations, version upgrades, product maintenance, and configuration management)

Other Position Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience with z/OSMF Configuration Assistant

  • Demonstrated experience supporting Parallel Sysplex

  • Demonstrated experience configuring debugging and maintaining TCPIP subsystems configuration

  • Demonstrated experience configuring, debugging, and maintaining VTAM subsystems configurations

  • Demonstrated communication and presentation skills

  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and to prioritize workload under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Demonstrated ability to execute tasks associated with customers disaster recovery plans

  • Demonstrated skills in the majority of the following


o z/OS Assembler language programming

o SYSPLEX Operations

o Coupling Facility Management


o UNIX Systems Services

o z/OS



o ISV product installations, upgrades and maintenance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with File Transfer Protocol (FTP)/Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) IP Connectivity

  • Demonstrated experience with configuration of the JVM on the Mainframe

Essential Functions

The position is part of a 7 day per week, 24 hour per day managed services operations. To provide the required coverage, must be willing to work other shifts including weekends, holidays, and overtime.

As a Mainframe Developer, you will provide analysis, programming, testing, implementation, and ongoing production operational support for the IT supported Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) mainframe business applications systems in use at the North Carolina Department of Revenue. You will perform analytical and programming activities to maintain existing applications and develop code and solutions that support the system. You will be responsible for problem resolutions related to assigned production systems and associated data files. These tasks are time critical and must be performed according to established problem management policy. Knowledge of complex systems is required in order to solve problems timely and keep systems operational. You will research problems appropriately, determine a solution to the problem, implement the supervisory approval and document the problem according to problem management standards. You will use established life cycle development phases and established software development and maintenance standards. Employee will also ensure that all quality assurance, change management, configuration control, security and user recovery procedures are followed. The Position will be responsible for the following: * Communicating with user liaisons/end-users to determine the scope and functions of new or existing systems. Charts and examples are often used for clarity. * Developing requirements, conceptual designs, and detail design documents to present to the user for approval at the appropriate phases of life cycle development. * Performing all of the programming duties associated with a particular program or project. * Evaluating completed program assignments to check for accurate interpretation of program specifications and testing requirements. * Evaluating and testing systems to ensure that requirements have been met in a project and to bring that project to completion and into production. * Employee will work with operations, database group, server administrators, network group, end-users, user liaisons and other affected parties. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies * Experience developing/maintaining mainframe based management systems using COBOL, Easytrieve, JCL, CICS, SQL and DB2 * Experience working in an environment with TSO/ISPF, Z/OS, MVS and IMS * Experience in technical and functional requirements documentation * Experience with troubleshooting and debugging mainframe applications * Knowledge of techniques and methodologies relating to software quality assurance and testing through the full systems development lifecycle * Ability to manage time, milestones and be self-directed * Excellent verbal and written communication skills Management Preferences: NSTALL/1 expertise, FTP knowledge, Experience with file management tools such as CA File master and CA Intertest Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, math, or Engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in business application consulting or development; or Bachelor's degree and some computer coursework from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in business application consulting or development; or Associate's degree in Computer Programming from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in application consulting or development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
