JOB TITLE: Custodial/Maintenance Person

NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:

Provide and perform custodial and maintenance services that will assure a safe, attractive, comfortable,

clean and efficient school environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.High School Diploma

2.Valid New Jersey driver's license

3.Complete Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform

and Control Act of 1986.

4.Clearance of required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. Citizenship or legal resident alien status.

5.Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:29-2.3.

6.Ability to adequately communicate in English and properly communicate.

7.Provide references that establish good moral character.

8.Possess interpersonal skills to relate to students, parents, community,

administration, teaching staff members and support staff members.

9.Exhibit a personality compatible with working with students, staff,

administration, parents, and the community.

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds and School Business Administrator

JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Custodial/Maintenance Person:

  • Keep building(s) and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times.

  • Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity. Service the units when needed.

  • Shovels, plows, and/or sand walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate.

  • Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open, and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.

  • Raises the United States flag each school day and lowers it at the end of the day.

  • Sweeps school facilities daily and dusts furniture.

  • Cleans corridors after each school day, and during the day when their condition requires.

  • Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily. Displays ability to perform plumbing needs.

  • Reports immediately to Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds and to the principal any damage to school property.

  • Remains on the school premises during assigned hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required.

  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building(s) each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.

  • Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such need replacements from the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder in his/her duties. Displays ability to service any equipment as needed.

  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.

  • Performs maintenance tasks in various trade skills (as defined in qualifications) as assigned by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds or in School Dude application.

  • Responds to requests for emergency repairs.

  • Assures a work order has been issued prior to performing any tasks other than emergencies.

  • Keeps a log of all maintenance functions performed (School Dude)

  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.

  • Unloads supplies and other deliveries and moves them to designated areas.

  • Washes windows, cleans blinds and shades.

  • Attends required staff meetings, seminars, and trainings as designated by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds and the School Business Administrator.

  • Maintains knowledge of current developments, current interpretations of the field and current methodology of the field in which assigned.

  • Operates equipment, electronic and otherwise (as determined by supervisors) needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities.

  • Maintains ethical and professional behavior in working with school personnel and other agencies.

  • Protects confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and uses discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.

  • Performs any duty that is within the scope of his/her employment as assigned by his/her supervisors and not otherwise prohibited by law.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Possess sufficient strength to lift weight as much as 50 pounds and be able to move it as far as 50 feet at a time.

  • Possess stamina to remain on their feet for periods as long as two full hours without any discomfort.

  • Possess stamina to remain seated for periods of as long as two full hours without discomfort.

  • Possess visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer monitor for up to half of each workday.

  • Possess the ability to climb a ladder at heights necessary to perform the duties of the job.

  • Operate district trucks and a snowplow.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Handle the following:

  • Cleaning Agents

  • Solvents

  • Pesticides

  • Exposure to various existing conditions on the grounds or in the building(s).

  • Exposure to exhaust fumes.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS:

The Custodial/Maintenance Person shall be employed under the following terms:

  • Work year of 12 months.

  • Salary or hourly wage as specified in the Greenwich Township Board of Education policies/regulations and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Benefits as specified in the Greenwich Township Board of Education policies/regulations and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Leave time as specified in the Greenwich Township Board of Education policies/regulations and the Collective Bargaining Agreement, if applicable.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

The holder of the position of Custodial/Maintenance position shall be evaluated by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds in accordance with Policy/Regulation No. #4220. This Job Description and such other criteria shall be established by the Board of Education.
