Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The North Carolina Zoological Park exists for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of all our citizens and visitors. The mission of the zoo is to conserve and protect representative examples of natural beauty, endangered and threatened plant and animal species, and ecological features of the continents it represents.
The primary purpose of the Physical Plant Maintenance Section is to maintain Zoo facilities and equipment to keep them in good condition and proper working order. This section will construct small structures such as animal caging, decking, and small building structures, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, physical plant maintenance and vehicle shop.
It is responsible for seven major exhibit buildings, five restaurants, three gift shops, ten sets of restrooms, three support buildings, seven greenhouses and numerous animal holding areas. It is also responsible for servicing and maintenance of all equipment including trams, buses, trucks, vans, utility vehicles, tractors, bobcats, mowers, welders, and blowers and a variety of other equipment as well as minor painting and paving repairs.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The NC Zoo is filling a Maintenance/Construction Technician II position. The primary responsibilities of this position is for Construction Crew and General Maintenance Section to include welding and steel fabrication, construction of small structures, and general maintenance.
Position will report directly to the Zoo's Physical Plant Maintenance Section. This position will work both as an assistant and independently performing duties in all areas of maintenance and construction under the direction of a Maintenance/Construction Technician III or higher. These trades include but are not limited to steel fabrication, hydraulics, carpentry, concrete, general building maintenance and general park maintenance.
This position will be primarily assigned to fabrication and construction but will at times be required to perform tasks outside of those trades and may be reassigned to a different group of trades such as plumbing, utilities, HVAC, refrigeration and electrical depending on the needs of the organization. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor animal exhibits, buildings and other structures as well as outside in varying weather conditions. Qualified applicant must be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic.
Successful candidate is required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas. Position is required to work weekend and holiday on-call rotations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Must have working experience in at least two of the following trades:
Welding & Steel Fabrication
General Building Maintenance
Carpentry & General Construction
General working knowledge of the principles and techniques of a variety of complex trades.Skilled in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to the work.Ability to operate the more common types of machine shop equipment.Ability to follow oral and written instructions.Ability to regularly and safely: lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally, climb stairs and ladders, move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs, work in tight spaces, stand for the majority of the day, endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year, negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot, hear and respond to radio communication, and drive motor vehicles at day and at night.Must possess and be able to maintain a valid NC Driver's License.Required to participate in the Zoo's occupational health program. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification - May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
