Primary Purpose of the Position:

This Maintenance Construction/Technician position will serve in a general maintenance role at the new Thomas Day State Historic Site in Milton, North Carolina.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and grounds at the site

  • Perform sub-journey level maintenance work in HVAC, carpentry, masonry, painting, small engine repair/maintenance, electrical, and/or plumbing

  • General janitorial and housekeeping duties

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to walk long distances on uneven ground.

  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions.

  • Must be able to climb ladders and work on lifts and roofs.

  • This position may require occasional night or weekend work.

  • Must have a valid NC driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment

  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Demonstrated experience in landscaping and mowing

  • Demonstrated experience in minor building repair and/or preventative maintenance of buildings

  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining small engine equipment

Management Prefers:

  • Basic knowledge of building preservation and repair

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience associated with a variety of mechanical or building trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification:

Section/Unit Description:

The Thomas Day State Historic Site consists of the 1818 Union Tavern and the 1860 Milton State Bank. Union Tavern was the home and workshop of Thomas Day, a free Black furniture maker and cabinetmaker who made his name making furniture for wealthy clients. Today, Thomas Day is considered one of the greatest furniture makers of his era. Both Union Tavern and the Milton State Bank are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Division Description:

The North Carolina Division of State Historic Sites and Properties connects people to North Carolina's history, sharing the power of place to inspire a common future through preservation, education, and transformative engagement.
