Primary Purpose of the Position: 

The Maintenance Construction Supervisor II is primarily responsible for the direct supervision of the division's three Carpenter II positions, directing the work of the carpentry and paint crews in coordination with the other trades serving the division, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical and Mechanical.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the creation and administering of informal contracts for the division and work directly with contractors engaged in those projects and projects being administered by the division Capitol Projects Unit.

  • The position works directly with site managers to address repair needs, creation of new projects, and management of outside contractors.

  • The position may have hands on duties in the execution of Craft Services projects and exhibit projects with the Curatorial Services team.

  • Working with the Construction Maintenance Supervisor III, the position receives, assesses, schedules, and delegates work requests from sites within the division.

  • Work may include making the final technical decisions in a wide variety of construction related trades.

  • Position may be responsible for design and implementation of in-house turn-key projects.

  • The position prepares cost estimates and material lists for in-house repair projects.

  • The position participates in facility planning discussions and preparation of estimates and justifications for capital projects and provides input to designers via plan review and comment of new construction projects.                                   

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be capable of exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Must have a valid NC class C driver's license or obtain one within 30 days of employment.

  • Must have the ability to work at heights on roofs, ladders, scaffolds and lifts, or in confined spaces.

  • Must be able to read blueprints & diagrams.

  • Must be able to pass a DOA Motor Fleet Management background screening sufficient to qualify to drive a school bus in the State of NC.

  • Must be able to travel Statewide with overnight stays for multiple days.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

  • Significant experience in the carpentry trade, historic structure restoration, modern construction, cabinetry, and exhibit fabrication.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently at the journeyman level in the carpentry trade.

  • Advanced skill in the use of hand tools and power-driven machinery used in the carpentry and building trades (e.g., hammers, chisels, squares, reciprocating saws, band saws, routers, miter boxes)

  • Working knowledge of the NC building codes.

  • Experience producing written documentation of work assignments.

  • Experience directing the work of skilled and/or semi-skilled employees.

  • Experience estimating the amount and value of needed repairs (time and material estimates).

Management Prefers:

  • Experience designing and/or modifying architectural and exhibition installations within the confines of the NC building code to meet actual construction site conditions.

  • Experience utilizing the NC E-procurement system to acquire project materials and tools.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four (4) years of progressive experience in facility maintenance or construction including experience in at least three (3) building or mechanical trades including one (1) year of supervisory experience in construction, maintenance and/or repair of buildings and facilities

or

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Section/Unit Description: 

The Craft Services Unit within the division of State Historic Sites is responsible for the Division's Construction / Repair / Maintenance program for both equipment and facilities. All work within the Craft Services Unit is headed by the Division's Maintenance Construction Supervisor III (Director of Craft Services) who is under the direct supervision of the Division Director (Assistant Director of State Archives and History).

Division Description: 

The Division of State Historic Sites was established to coordinate the administration of the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources' State Historic Sites Program, which includes 27 historic sites across North Carolina and Division offices located in Raleigh.
