Maintenance Worker - Parks & Forestry (Seasonal)

Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks involving the maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, trails, open space, and related recreation facilities and equipment.

Essential Functions

Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers

• Interact with others in a manner that is professional and inspires open communication

• Help to create and maintain a respectful workplace culture and champions diversity, equity and inclusion

Perform turf maintenance in and around park, trail and recreational facilities

• Mow and trim grass, trees, and shrubs

• Renovate heavily used areas including topdressing, seeding, sodding, aerification

• Fertilize and conduct broadleaf weed control program on all turf areas including the necessary recordkeeping

Prepare athletic field surfaces for use

• Provide evening and weekend service for parks and sports activities

• Lay out, paint, and maintain field lines

• Drag and level aglime surfaces

• Install and inspect goals and nets

Perform tree-care maintenance in parks, open spaces, and along trails

• Trim, prune, water, fertilize, spray trees and forested areas

• Remove wood waste and undesirable vegetation

• Make site preparations, handle and install trees and shrubs in reforestation efforts

• Assist in trail and boulevard safety clearance program

Maintain landscape and assists in the annual/perennial program

• Prepare planting sites and installs materials according to design

• Maintain prairies, open spaces, wetlands and other natural areas

• Water, weed, transplant, thin and mulch new and established plant beds

• Fertilize, spray, prune, cultivate, deadhead, collect seeds and maintain plants

Complete routine maintenance of parks, buildings, play areas, and trails

• Repair or report items requiring repair (i.e., broken benches, bleachers, play structures, holes) as needed

• Perform minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting

• Wash, wax and paint interior and exterior surfaces in park buildings

• Pick up and dispose of trash and glass

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid driver's license with a good driving record

• Relevant experience related to construction or maintenance

• Must have physical strength sufficient to perform strenuous labor tasks under varying weather conditions

Desired Qualifications

• Class B CDL preferred

Physical Activities

Occasional(sometimes required to perform the job):stationary desk or bench work with neck bent forward.

Weights Lifted/Carried

The employee must be able to frequently lift items weighing 0 - 50 pounds from 0 - 6 feet. The employee will occasionally need to lift items weighing up to 100 pounds. The employee must be able to frequently carry items weighing 0 - 50 pounds from 0 - 100 feet. The employee will occasionally need to lift items weighing up to 100 pounds. Items lifted/carried include tools, ladders, paint, buckets, fencing lumber, 50lb bags, seed fertilizer, blocks and logs.

Working outdoors, employee must have physical strength sufficient to perform strenuous labor tasks under varying weather conditions; working indoors; operating machinery or vehicles; working with chemicals; working near fumes/vapors; driving a city vehicle.
