This position is responsible for performing technical duties in the maintenance of parks and recreation buildings and facilities.

Major Duties

  • Assists with the inspection of playground equipment; assists in the completion of annual audits of playground equipment.

  • Operates tractors and backhoes.

  • Maintains buildings and facilities; cleans bathrooms, mops, sweeps, clean windows, strips and waxes floors, and changes light bulbs.

  • Repairs buildings and facilities; replaces protective padding on gym walls; designs, fabricates, and installs work on special project; repairs tables and chairs.

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical and plumbing systems; performs carpentry repair and construction duties.

  • Mows grass, weed-eats, distributes mulch, sows and fertilizes grass.

  • Picks up trash in parks.

  • Installs drainage systems for parks and athletic fields.

  • Assists in the repair and maintenance of department equipment.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the standards, materials, techniques, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of a parks and recreations building and facilities.

  • Knowledge of the installation of playground equipment.

  • Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of swimming pool equipment.

  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

  • Skill in the operation of such equipment as a backhoes and tractors.

  • Skill in performing basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical installation, repair, and maintenance duties.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

  • No experience requirements.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee in this position to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently/repeatedly required to stand; walk; use hands and exert forces needed to handle various types and sizes of tools, equipment and objects; reach with hands and arms and perform elevated work for periods of time; climb ladders and balance; climb into vehicles and equipment; stoop; kneel; half-kneel; squat; crouch; or crawl; and talk; or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift, push, pull and/or move more than 100 pounds. An employee in this position will have successfully passed a "Functional Prework Screen" administered by a professional and impartial third party specialist.

SAFETY SENSITIVE: This position has been identified as safety-sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool. The methodology for choosing the random test subjects is handled by an outside, impartial, third party vendor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals, and requires the use of protective devices such as masks, gloves, or goggles.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Maintenance Crew Leader - Parks, Senior Groundskeeper, or Mechanic assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, and relevant city, state, and federal codes, laws, and regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related technical maintenance duties.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of the parks and recreation buildings and facilities. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe and attractive parks and recreation facilities to city residents and visitors.
