Maintenance Worker (multiple vacancies)

$3,040 - $3,880 per month

Senior Maintenance Worker I (multiple vacancies)

$3,581 - $4,570 per month

Position and starting wage will be commensurate with the experience, qualifications, and skills of successful candidates and based on the needs of the Public Works Department.

Future salary increases:

  • 4% - effective July 6, 2024
  • 4% - effective July 5, 2025
  • 3% - effective July 4, 2026

This recruitment is to establish eligible lists to fill current and future Maintenance Worker and Senior Maintenance Worker I vacancies.

The lists established during this recruitment may also be used to fill vacancies that occur for the same positions within other divisions of the Public Works Department.

The Public Works Department employs Maintenance Workers and Senior Maintenance Workers in the following divisions:

Building and Facility

The Building and Facility Maintenance Division handles the maintenance and repairs for all city buildings and facilities including 71 buildings, 32 park facilities, and all city-owned electrical equipment.  Duties include general carpentry, electrical and HVAC maintenance, plumbing, general repairs, parking structure maintenance, swimming pool maintenance and repair, street light maintenance, and a variety of other related projects.

Landscape

The Landscape Maintenance Division serves the community by maintaining and preserving Fullerton's green space and recreational areas that include 52 parks, school grounds, 28 miles of recreational trails, 30 acres of median islands, 40,000 trees in public rights-of-way, and other city-owned property. Operations include landscape maintenance, irrigation repair and maintenance, recreational trail maintenance, preparation and maintenance of sports fields, weed abatement, pesticide application, tree and shrub planting, pruning, and removal, as well as emergency cleanup of downed trees.

Sewer

The Sewer Division ensures the maintenance and rehabilitation of more than 320 miles of sewer pipe within the city.  Staff provides routine and emergency mainline cleaning and has developed a program to clean private sewer lateral clogs from city-owned trees.  The division also manages a Fats, Oils, and Grease (F.O.G) control program to minimize sewer blockages.  We partner with our Engineering Division to manage a comprehensive Capital Repair Program that keeps our sewer system safe and reliable.

Street

The Street Maintenance Division manages weekly street sweeping, street sign installation, traffic lane, and pavement legend painting, and maintains the public sidewalks, city storm drains, and asphalt pavements over 285 miles of public streets.

Water

The Water Division handles all aspects of the water system which includes the upgrade and repair of infrastructure, management of water production and delivery over 424 miles of distribution pipes, safeguards water quality, manages cross-connection/backflow prevention, water conservation programs, and supplies water utility and meter reading services for residents and businesses within the city.

The Positions:

Maintenance Worker

Maintenance Worker is a multi-incumbent class in Public Works.  Incumbents perform a wide variety of general and manual laboring duties.  Incumbents normally work under direct supervision and within a crew but are also expected to work productively on an individual basis and/or in the absence of a supervisor or lead worker.

Senior Maintenance Worker I

Senior Maintenance Workers are distinguished from Maintenance Workers by the performance of more difficult duties involving the exercise of a greater degree of responsibility, independent judgment, and initiative.  Senior Maintenance Workers perform their duties with a limited amount of direction/supervision, are expected to solve most work-related problems independently, and may act as crew leaders on a limited basis.

Education and Experience:

A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities are as follows:

Maintenance Worker:

Completion of the tenth grade.

AND

Six months of general maintenance/laboring experience.

Senior Maintenance Worker I:

Graduation from high school.

AND

One year of general maintenance experience.

The knowledge and abilities that are required to perform the duties and responsibilities for all positions in this series include the following:

Knowledge of:

  • Standard hand and power tools.

  • Methods used in basic laboring work.

  • Safety precautions and practices necessary when working with hand and power equipment.

  • Chemicals used in landscape applications.

  • Routine maintenance practices as related to buildings, grounds, streets, water, and related tasks.

AND

Ability to:

  • Perform strenuous manual labor at a variety of work sites.

  • Operate job-related power equipment.

  • Lift and carry heavy objects safely.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Communicate effectively orally.

  • Read at the level required for successful job performance.

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

In addition to the above, the knowledge and abilities that are required to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Senior Maintenance Worker I include:

Knowledge of:

  • Safety precautions and practices necessary when working with specialized equipment.

  • General trade duties such as concrete work, rough carpentry, plumbing, electricity, water and sewer systems, asphalt work, and landscaping.

AND

Ability to:

  • Exercise independent judgment.

  • Direct a small crew as needed.

  • Assist in training other maintenance staff.

  • Write simple reports, record data, and transfer data from one form to another.

Special Requirements - All Classes in This Series:

  • Valid Class C California driver's license and acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment in this series.

  • Certain positions or assignments may require the possession of or the ability to acquire a specialized motor vehicle operator's license (Class A or B).

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate City needs.  Certain positions or assignments may require shift work and are subject to overtime and emergency callback.

  • Valid and appropriate Water Treatment and/or Distribution Operator Certificates issued by the State of California, depending on the area assigned are preferred but not required.

Assessment Process:

Applicants must be specific and complete in describing their qualifications for the position. BASED ON THE INFORMATION PRESENTED ON THE APPLICATION MATERIALS, those applicants possessing the most suitable qualifications will be invited to a written examination, performance examination, oral interview, and/or other assessment instruments.

Candidates who successfully complete the assessment process for Maintenance Worker and Senior Maintenance Worker will be placed on an eligible list for these classifications, which will remain in effect for at least one year or until an insufficient number of candidates remain on the list.

Current City of Fullerton employees may be given preference during the testing and/or selection process.

Appointment:

All employment offers, including appointment offers to City of Fullerton employees, are conditional based upon the successful completion of a background and medical examination performed by the City's designated physician, at City expense.  Medical exams are administered to assess an individual's ability to perform the physical requirements of this position.  In addition, City of Fullerton employees that are appointed to safety-sensitive classifications and all new hires will undergo a drug screen.

All new hires will be fingerprinted. Fingerprints are verified by the State of California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Maintenance Worker and Senior Maintenance Worker appointees will serve a 12-month probationary period.
