Expected Hiring Range:$30,123-$33,135. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A starting salary above the range listed may be considered for highly qualified individuals not to exceed the maximum of the grade. Full range of grade is $49,708.82.

Examples of Duties

  • Perform grounds maintenance using a variety of tools and equipment.

  • Engage in general landscaping work, including operating push mowers, weed eaters, and trimming trees and shrubs.

  • Utilize specialized equipment like backpack-mounted sprayers to maintain concrete islands and sidewalks.

  • Clear snow and spread ice melting materials to ensure safe walkways during winter.

  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment and tools, following safety requirements and procedures at all times.

  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to complete assignments efficiently and effectively.

  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Other equipment operation and general labor duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • General knowledge of maintenance work performed by municipalities.

  • Ability to operate a variety of maintenance equipment, from push mowers to tractors and trucks.

  • Familiarity with landscaping tasks such as applying grass seed, straw, and mulch.

  • Understanding of safety practices and the ability to identify and report safety issues.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to follow supervisory instructions.

  • Commitment to working safely and adhering to established safety principles.

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.

  • Some work experience performing preventative maintenance in buildings, water and sewer lines, street maintenance, and/or grounds facilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is preferred.

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License

Supplemental Information

Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects. Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, hearing and repetitive motions. Excessive walking is required. The worker is required to have the acuity to be the operator of trucks and other equipment. The employee is subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions, proximity to moving mechanical parts, and exposure to extreme weather conditions, noise, and vibration. Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.

Inclement Weather Classification: Essential

The City offers a comprehensive benefit package, which includes 10 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, longevity pay, medical and dental insurance, andservice and disability retirement. A paid life insurance policy equal to one and one-half times an employee's annual salary, with option to purchase additional coverage at significantly reduced rates, is also offered, as are 401(k) and 457 deferred compensation plans.
